They never took jerusalem. They went there, nine of them in 1300's, and took up residence in the stables of Solomon's Temple, and told the King they were there to protect pilgrims traveling to the area. Instead, they spent 9 years digging under the Temple. And, one day, the up and left with no explanation and returned to Europe. Within days, the Pope issued an edict saying the Templars were a power unto themselves...
Many beleive that they discovered something in that Temple that was so damning the the Christian Faith that they blackmailed the pope with it.

The Crusades. The same reason any and all of the Crusades were carried out: lust for power under the guise of "saving" the Holy Land from "evil" Muslims who had just as much right, if not more since they were already occupying the area, to be there as anyone else. The Templars came in from faraway lands shoved their beliefs on the occupants without any regards otherwise and killed anyone who didn't agree. Not terribly different than the real reason for the Iraq war (which is not oil) today and all the other wars there that the US has been involved in.

Knights Templar didn't take Jerusalem. They helped a much larger army. They did murder thousands of Jews and even more Muslim civilians.

When-I think around the 1200's
Why?-the Pope told them too, it was a huge part of the crusades, they were developed to rid the 'holy city' of the 'infidels' (which were the Islamic people) they were also responsible for escorting travelers
BTW, really unsure about the date, actually, now that I think abut it, the pope had them round up and killed in 1317-that was the end and they were developed a little before that
