I don't see anything wrong with it. Chances are you chose a somewhat unusual word because it expresses precisely what you wanted to say...and I personally appreciate such precision in language.
For future reference, if you want to know whether a word is outdated or old-fashioned, bounce it off a teenager! ; )

It's not real common, but nothing wrong with using it. I use all kinds of words, from different eras, because I like them and I see no reason to sound just like everyone else...not to mention, our language has done quite a bit of degrading over recent years/decades.
Pining is a perfectly acceptable word...but then, I'm 42 so some would consider me an "old fogey". LOL!

Nope, I used that very word today. I don't think there are many words that become obsolete or old-fashioned. If you use a word like that more than most people you know, chances are it's becuase you have a better vocabulary than they do, not because you're old-fashioned.

LOL - 'pining' is an old fashioned word but I love it....I often will put 'pining for chocolate' on my Yahoo messenger....I am a complete dork : )
