What would be the Ideal dog to get for her(haha I mean me) just kidding....it is for her. It needs to be fairly small because we live in a condo with a patio about 10X20. the size of our patio is the reason i never got a dog but i want my lil one to have the same experience as a child i had. I was surrounded by animals all my life. a dog that can be in and out doors?

Honestly-I would consider waiting until she is at least 2 before getting a dog. My reason is simple-right now your focus will remain on your daughter-so the dog wouldn't receive the proper training around the daughter or you. When she is 2 both the dog and the child will be able to learn from one another and you can teach them how to interact properly. As far as what type of dog goes.....you don't need a very small dog. Most small dogs attitude is very territorial and they usually need more room then most people think. However, something similiar to the following will be ideal: Corgi, Beagle, Collies, Terriers, and Pugs. i use to work at a petstore so i can help with any other questions even on specific breeds. Also see the website below to get an ABC listing of small dogs and a little information on the attitudes. Good Luck!

The dog is for you and that's OK. In a small condo if you and the baby's mother want a toy breed check out the Japanese Chin. They have great temperaments are very intelligent and do no often bark.In fact many Chin owners complain that they have never heard their Chin bark. Bellow is a link to the toy group.

I would stay away from terriers in a condo. They can be very active and a bit much for small spaces.

Take a look at any of the toy breeds. If you want to go for a bigger dog, look into english bulldogs or corgis. They have a wonderful temperaments low activity level and tolerate small children very well.
I would strongly suggest you avoid a Jack Russell terrier or working terrier breeds in general. These dogs are bred to hunt and need to large areas to run and spend that energy. I would also avoid a beagle for your lifestyle. Unless you intend to exercise him regularly. He is bred to hunt and he needs to work or he will become bored and destructive. Having said all of this. There are plenty of small to med size mixed breed pups at the local animal shelter who would love to run and play with your daughter on your 10x20 patio.

Words to the wise - no dogs for awhile. Raise the kid first.

The first time your child hit the dog and he snapped, all three of you would pay for your severe lack of judgement. Thus ... no dogs or cats unitl the kid is at least three years old and fairly able to act on her own. You would be surprised at the damage even a little dog can do if motivated...getting a pet is selfish on your part now.

These would be best for your living space: Jack Russel terrier, or a beagel. A chihuahua is small but there kind of mean, a shitzu puppy would be great to... try looking around to find teh dog you like. I found my dog at puppyfind.com...hope you find your dog

i would definitally say a boston terrier. they will not dominate her and like knock her over and stuff. they are really gentle. great dogs for inside and out!!! They will play as long as you want. Or they will sleep as long as you want. They are so laid back. They're great!
