From my experience as a mom of 3, once they are in school you can ask that they be tested. I wouldn't place too much on it if he is though. Making a big deal about him being advanced for his age can create problems with kids his own age and make him stand out unnecessarily. Believe me, kids DON"T want to stand out as the smart one. I have a 17 yo son who is extremely advanced for his age and always has been. Has been tested several times since he was 5. Even took his SAT's VERY early. But he didn't like all the attention. He doesn't like the other kids to know how intelligent he is, it make him a "freak" in the other kids eyes. So go slow, even if he is advanced. You can always check with like parents magazine, they usually have a list of accomplishments for a particular age group. See if he fits that or if he fits in the next one up or down.
