I'm 18 and recently moved out of my parents' house to my own apartment to be closer to college. It's been 2 weeks since I moved in, and last night, my father followed me from work to my apartment, and was forcing me to let him come in. (thank god, the key jammed and neither of us could get in, got to go to a friends house) anyway, he is basically forcing me to move back home, and has threatened to stalk me. He is following me from work, school, and everywhere I go. He even dragged me by my hair in the hallway of my building. Is there anything I can do? Since I'm 18, can he legally make me move back in, or have consent over me? Is a restraining order too much? I'm scared to go home to my apt, I had to sleep in my school's library last night...

First I would go to the polince. If you don't wanna get your dad in trouble, have an attorney let your father know he has no legal rights - this may cost you $50, but should worth it. If that doesn't work, then go for a restraining order.

Your father is doing two things that could be considered illegal. Kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment, both felonies.

If he is paying for your college, think hard before you play hardball--he doesn't have to keep paying. That said, you do have the option of calling police, giving him a 'no trespassing' notice on your apartment and work, or getting a restraining order.

Can you get your mom involved? Why is he doing this--are you getting into trouble? Is he being irrational, or looking out for you? There is something going on you aren't telling us--one of you two is a little crazy.

Whatever the reason for his bizarre behavior, you can certainly take legal action against him. His conduct not only makes you uncomfortable but unsafe. There have been instances of physical violence so there is no reason why you would have to feel guilty about getting a restraining order against him. Many people may suggest you talk to him...bla,bla,bla or to move somewhere else...yada,yada,yada but you know better than anyone that it wouldn't do any good. Make him know for good that his days of dominance are OVER!!!

Gez he is obsessed, you need to be able to live your life.I think your situation is most troubling. He needs to come to terms with the fact that you are 18 and need to go to school w/o him treating you like your 6 yo. If he can't behave I would consult with an attorney and get a restraining order.Good luck and remember you don't have to take that crap.

jeeez, take legal action, it'll scare him off. but a restraining order might be good if he's really bothering you that much. talk to him first though and tell him that now that you are 18 he has no control over you and that he cannot follow you wherever you go and that it's time for him to let go. serisously, good luck!

Are we hearing all of the story? I need to know the why's. If you are 18 and don't depend on him for your support, you shouldn't have a problem. Get a restraining order.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU.
