From people who do not homeschool and do not know much about it:
1. What about socialization?
2. How do you find books? [People have NO IDEA that it is not a question of FINDING a vendor to sell me something - the problem is choosing from the VAST ARRAY of products aimed at hs'ers...]
3. Third would be questions along the line of what I am missing by not being employed outside the home.
From people who are anti-homeschooling:
1. Don't they miss their friends? [They have more friends than the average ps kid.]
2. Don't you think we should leave it up to the experts? [YES, exactly, we should leave it to the EXPERTS because we see how GOOD A JOB they are doing!! GOOD IDEA!!]
3. How much does it cost?
4. What about sports/other electives?
5. Are you qualified to teach them?
6. Do you think it's a good idea to have your kids in grades above where they'd be in school? [Hahaha, this is my personal favorite. Makes me want to spout off something rude. My husband and I are both members of Mensa.]
From people who are interested in hsing their own kids:
1. What curriculum should I use?
2. What is the cost?
3. How many hours/day do you spend?
4. What other activities are you involved in?
5. What about hsing through high school?
6. How do I deal with relatives/the school I am withdrawing from?
7. What is unschooling/What are unit studies?
8. Do you do any kind of achievement tests? Where can I get them?
9. What kind of chores do your kids do?
10. Do you use any particular child-rearing method?
My kids get questions from other kids like:
1. Do you have school in your pajamas?
2. Do you have school when you are sick? [Yes, but not when the teacher is sick.]
3. Do you take tests?
4. Does your mom make everything really easy for you?
5. Do you like being homeschooled?
6. Do you do all the regular subjects?
7. Do you have lots of time to play?
Questions I'd like to be asked:
1. Wow, lady, how do you do it all?
2. How can my kids be as well-behaved and socialized as yours?
3. What benefits have you already seen from hsing? What benefits do you expect to see in the future?
4. What are you doing to prepare your children for life?

I just met a soon to be new family member (my brother in law is engaged!) and we had a great conversation and I felt like she was really interested about homeschooling and that was really great! But sometimes, I have to say that you can tell by the questions that people are just coming up with questions to try almost to start arguments and try to show you the error of your ways or something. As if we didn't consider the decision before we began homeschooling, and their questions will change our minds.
Some of my relatives for example ask questions such as "What is your scope and sequence for the children for the next few years? I mean what teacher has that planned out and ready to talk about at Christmas break and/or want to discuss that for fun holiday discussion!?! Plus we tend to be a little bit unschoolers; I let the children dictate some of what we study by their interests so explaining that is interesting as well! What I don't like is when I have 2 family members (the principal and former teacher) gang up on me and wait until my husband is out of the room or gone to ask the questions and do it in more of an interrogation style instead of a one-on-one discussion like I just did in a friendly fashion with my soon-to-be sister-in-law.
I didn't handle it very well, to be honest, just stated my viewpoints (which you all know probably!) and felt very defensive. I thought they were very in the wrong to gang up on me, at least I felt ganged up on!

hai njroadie....
i am an indonesian, and for us, homeschool is something new, and it s booming these days...in indonesia. I am preparing a homeschool curriculum for indonesians, and i found that some of the answers are so...so... helpful for me. I will give seminars about homeshool, to give the right picture about it and i will be using your answer to answers the Q about socialization. Is that ok?? i was trying to contact you, but i saw that you did not allow anybody to contact you. so , i am using this to tell you. i really want to ask some help from you in connection w. homeschooling stuff coz i know from your answer that you are a smart and open person whose information i can trust. and i like your answer coz they are so detail!!! wow!! i learnt a lot from your answers!! :) Pls contact me....
and, to answer your Q...
coz i am indonesian and homeschoolong is something new for us... usually they ask about:
- socialization
- the experience in competition that they will not get outside the classroom
- experience in sitting in class
- what they will use to teach
- how much it cost
- since we do not speak in english, most indonesians do not understand english, they will withdraw themselves once they heard that we use internet too. so, they ask, "how about english?"
- how to teach?
- how about math?
- i have babies at home... how to do homeschooling with babies?
- not every family can do this. some, have fathers/mothers that always gets drunk, do gambling, says curses, high tempered person and can abuse the children (so, it s better to send the children to scholl)... so, what is the condition that we can use as the standard for that?
- is that any moral standard for doing homeschooling?
:)
those are from my experience... people asked me those Q. Some, i cant answer coz i am really new, but i know that homeschooling is so great that i am going to set up a curriculum (indonesian curriculum) that i will adjust with the condition of our country. so, can you pls contact me, and help me in this matter?
my contact email add is citra77devi@hotmail.com
Thx, Gb!

Basically, all my answers would be about the same as everybody else. My all-time favorite question was when I was thirteen and a grown woman asked me,
"So, the government probably sends you the same stuff as kids in public school right? Do you have to send your work back to them? Is there some kind of agency that grades your work?"
Needless to say, I was dumbfounded and to this day I have never again had a question like that.

i never get questions but my children's step mother has said on her blog she thinks my children squabble because they are with
each other 24/7 and she insists because of that they need to go to public school ! lol i am the oldest of five kids! and i was in public school and i can say plainly my sibs and i fought all the time! and we love each other so much now as adults. not because we fought, but because we were NORMAL!! my mother also had that "gift" where she could clear her throat and we'd shut up! i know she's not from a big family and I'm not sure why my ex husband didn't correct her malignant thinking, but my kids squabble because they're kids!! and siblings squabble when allowed to. we don't squabble in my home. i guess my four kids overwhelm their step mom every other weekend, but they don't overwhelm their momma every day! the same woman also noted "problems" with their education at home but doesn't realize that a learning problem dealt with in a home education will be resolved better and more accurately than in a public school. i know the public school system doesn't wait for any child. and those "left behind" are not left behind according to the school district, no, they're just PLACED behind!

That is too funny. I had not heard that before.
Our biggest thing is more comment than question.
"Oh you are one of THOSE moms." I respond with "OH and I see that you are NOT!" generally as I watch her children act like brats.
I also get told that I am pushing my daughter too fast and not letting her be a kid. I have followed her lead, she desires to learn and I am just giving her what she wants(isn't that what parents do these days?) She is only three and is finishing kindergarten this year and we will be starting 1st grade next fall.
