I haven't flown in a plane for a while but soon, I'll be on a 6-hour flight (with a 3 hour time zone difference when I land). What can I take to avoid any effects of jet lag and motion sickness?

If flying north to south or vice versa there should be no let lag issue. Flying east to west like JFK - LAX your revocery should be less than a day. Its the other way that seems to jam most folks up because of the time zones leap forward. Try to sleep on the plane if you can. Avoid caffeine and alcohol and drink plent of fluid. Also be sure to get up and move around for a few minutes halfway through the flight. Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated it will help you recover when you land and limit the effects of jetlag.

It depends.

If it's a day flight (meaning you leave during the day), then don't go to sleep. Stay awake, move around, and when you there go to bed at a normal time. If it's a night flight then go to sleep.

I ALWAYS take "No Jet Lag" which is a homeopathic tablet for jet lag. If you decide to use it, take one every hour (if you're awake) and every time you wake up (if you're sleeping). The every two hours did nothing for me, but the every hour worked like a charm on my last trip overseas. Also, consider ginseng. It helps as well. Take it on the plane.

I reccommend a dose of tylenol PM and a huge amount of water. That way you can sleep on the plane and won't end up dehydrated. Be sure to avoid alochol even if you don't take any medicine because it make the jet lag worse.
