My son had written on my bedroom wall with Sharpy and my daughter wrote on my sons bedroom wall with crayon.... i have to say that they've each only done it once thankfully! :) I bought Kilz paint from Walmart, which is #2 on Consumer reports ratings (behind the brand Home Depot sells which we can't get here) Anyway, I did nothing but paint and it covered it just fine. It was a dark blue sharpy covered with tan paint and black crayon covered with yellow paint. It is the only paint I will use now because of how great it worked.. I bought Lowe's brand for another room and it was terrible to use... too thin, coverage was poor. required a second coat.. and that was with NOTHING on the walls!

I had walls just like yours. lol. all the stuff such as magic eraser & whatnot weren't invented yet.
I used a blow dryer & hot soapy water to get the crayon off & for the pen & pencil I used an eraser that is pink on one side for pencil & blue on the other for pen. Of course it didn't all come off. where the pen & pencil gouged into the wall & filled it with drywall mud, let it dry & sanded.then I washed the walls with T.S.P & water, rinsed, let dry & put a coat of good quality primer-sealer on ( so nothing could bleed through )& then painted

The crayon marks have to be removed as well as you can. They will (mostly) come off with a solvent like paint thinner, Goof-Off, Oops, laquer thinner... You don't have to remove every trace.
Then you need to prime with a primer-sealer. These products keep stains (like smoke, water, rust) from bleeding through the new paint. A couple of good brands are Kilz and Bullseye. One coat is enough to seal the marks; you might want more coats if the marks are dark and could be hard to hide with light-color paint.

If you are going to paint the walls, then take off the writing with sandpaper. Put one or two coats of primer over the sanded area and then paint.

First get a bottle of "fantastik" spray some on the walls and wipe. Once all wiping is done, then paint first with "primer" (thin layer of paint) then paint the colour you choose on the walls.
Hope this helps

Goo-Gone will take off the crayon, for everythign else, use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser!! It took Sharpie marker off of my walls! As soon as it's fairly clean, paint as normal.

The first answer is good, but if that doesn't work, there is a good primer that covers anything (so it says). I haven't found anything that it hasn't covered yet.
It is called bullseye 123 and is a little more expensive than regular primer but it really works.
