Any topical treatment for cold sores from the pharmacy will help it go away faster. Also, you should take L-lysine tablets (available at health food stores) as soon as you feel one coming on. Since I've discovered this, I have not had any more fever blisters and this was about 3 years ago.

Do not under any circumstances put nail polish remover on it, as someone else suggested. Nail polish remover can be extremely harmful if it ends up inside your body. It does contain a drying agent, but is very dangerous.

Inhaling the fumes can be deadly, let alone putting it on an open sore on your mouth which will allow it to enter your glandular system.

The best way to heal cold sores/fever blisters that I have used is to put tea tree oil in the blister itself and take L-Lysine, which is an enzyme that your body is not producing enough of when you are suffering from these outbreaks.

If I am going to be in any stressful situations, I make sure that I take at least 1000 mg of the lysine for several days before the situation, during and after. This has cut my outbreaks down tremendously.

The suggestion to dispose of your toothbrush after an outbreak is a good one, you should also get rid of any lip balm or lipsticks that you have been using, as you can keep reinfecting your lips and have continuous outbreaks. Hope this helps, good luck and have a good day.

I just had to push the edit button when I noticed the uneducated comments made by divalicio...kill_yourself. You need to take a few more medical and science classes, the herpes virus that causes cold sores and fever blisters is not the same virus that comes from sexual contact. Babies can be born with the herpes virus that causes cold sores, it is a chemical and enzyme based dysfuntion of the body. Get your mind out of the gutter, little lady and try and help people on here instead of blasting garbage at people.

Apply blistex as soon as possible it really works
I get them to the blistex soothes it it sorta numb the pain for awhile. Actually a cold sore and a fever blister is herpes simplex type 1 the virus that causes them.
You can also prevent them by taking lysine supplements

If you want to get rid of it without spending a lot of money, get of bottle camphor oil and dab on it, smells and taste bad but it works.

I heard about the tannic acid in regular tea bags. Hold a wet tea bag on the cold sore after every meal and at night. Then cover it with a dab of vaseline. But the tea bag, the more times a day you hold it on the better it gets. Always a fresh tea bag each time of course.

Or you could try Abreva.

When I get them I use Abreva and they go away pretty quick. it's like $15 for a tiny tube, but it works. I'd stay away from the nail polish remover. I would use rubbing alchohol instead.

Get a cotton ball put a bit of nailpolish remover on it and apply it to the sore.. it'll burn, but it'll dry it out. Try not to wear chapstick during this time. Also change your tooth brush after it goes away and next time when you see that it's about to start again, take the nail polish remover to it before it opens up.
