These names honored various godparents, relatives and saints. Ruiz was his father's family name, Picasso was his mother's family name. In Spain the mother's family name is passed down to the child. After 1902 he dropped "Ruiz" and only signed his pictures "Picasso". This may be because he didn't like his father as much as his mother. Also "Ruiz" was a much more common name than "Picasso".
It would have been quite a hassle if he had to fill out his entire name every time he filled out a form!

What a mouthful. No wonder he just signed his work Picasso.

Are you sure? This never came up in any of my art history classes.
