The music is horrible, I am sure they do not just do it to entertain you while you hold. What is the real reason? I'd rather hear nothing at all.

To let you know the line is still active. Otherwise you might think it has been disconnected or someone put you on hold forever ;)

Actually, it does serve a purpose: it lets you know that you haven't been disconnected. I much prefer to have something in the way of a soundtrack on the phone when I am on hold, if only so that I know I haven't been disconnected and I'm not sitting there on the end of a dead connection.

I agree that most of the time the music chosen is pretty vile stuff, but at least it lets me know the line is still connected. I'd far rather have a news report being read while I'm on hold than some cheesy instrumental arrangement of songs that weren't very good in their original form decades ago when they were recorded. But please, no dead air!

You have two different Situations here
1st ..When they want you to hold, eg. (you are on hold so that you can talk to the sales department to buy a new PC)
In this situation, they put soft music so that you want to stay MENTALLY.
2ND Condition is that they don't want you to hold and keep the lines busy, eg. (You are on hold so that you can get help installing programs on your new PC), Here they put on loud noisy music that you don't hold and close the line "since you already bought the Computer".

They don't want you to get bored and because if you hear something on the other end, then there is hope that a live person will come to the phone.
