Im not sure...have you ever seen a puppy use the potty?..lol..no im just kidding. But the first person that answered is right. That same method worked really good for my pets but you have to keep doing that until they get use to it.

As a professional Dog Trainer, I can tell you the easiest way is to crate train. Many people feel putting the puppy in a crate is mean but it is the easiest way to potty train. Dogs generally will not soil the area where they sleep so potty training with a crate is very helpful. Crate training keeps the dog in one spot until you take it out to eliminate. This has to be done immediately upon waking up or 15 to 20 minutes after he/she eats and after a vigorous play time. You are actually training yourself to watch for the signs the puppy is giving you. You know when you get up in the morning the first stop is the bathroom and so the puppy will have to go also. If you take the puppy out as soon as you get up then you give it his breakfast. Twenty minutes later take the puppy out again and it should eliminate again. If you can keep and eye on it the pup can play in a safe area (like the kitchen).
If you cannot watch the puppy or if you have to go out for a bit, put the pup in his crate. Potty training is consistently watching for a pups signal to having to go and keeping on top of it. Praise with your voice and a treat as soon as your puppy goes and he will soon learn what is correct. Good luck, patience is the key.

First designate a potty area, usally by the door so they know. get a roll of duck tape, plastic sheeting, and newspaper. put the plastic down and tape it, and put the paper over it. to get the puppy to go on the paper, you have to put it there when he looks like he needs to go. they will walk around a snif the ground. pick it up and put it on the paper. Do this for a few days, once it gets the hang of it, when it looks like it needs to go put it out side. if he does his business out side reward him. doing this for a few weeks and it should be potty trained in no time.

Go to Walmart and buy the training pads. Then put them by the front door, the puppy will use them, then put the puppy out side.
I had a very easy time training my dogs with this method.

Some very good answers here. I'll share what worked for me. I crate trained and left him in the crate during the nap times and periods I just couldn't spend time with him. As soon as he came out of the crate, right outside until he did his business. as soon as he did, I gave praise, then brought him right back inside to teach him what outside was all about.
I started off taking him out every 20 minutes or so. Then I would gradually increase that time. Eventually after 3 weeks he was able to hold it for a few hours.
I also paid constant attention to him and learned what he looked like outside before he went. If I saw that same behaviour inside, I'd distract him and get him outside quickly. More praise.
Following this technique, he only ever had 2 accidents, and one was clearly my fault because I let him out of my site when he was too young. He actually went to the door to get out.
The WORST thing you can do is put their nose it it and smack them. They don't understand.

my dog was easy to train - we took him out a lot so he would realize that's where he should go. use words like outside or similiar potty phrases each time you take your doggy out. the training pads didn't work for us. but you should get them too.
when and if he goes to the bathroom inside tell the dog "no" grab the dog immediatly and take him out even if he's still going try not to let him finish.i def. recommened taking him out as much as you can. good luck:)
