You asked a good question. The only difference is that the word psychotropic is used loosley describing what a psychoactive drug does. A psychoactive drug which is called a psychotropic substance is a chemical substance that acts primarily upon the central nervous system where it alters brain function, resulting in temporary changes in perception, mood, consciousness and behavior.

All psychotropic drugs, prescribed altering substances, are psychoactive drugs, altering substances. Not all psychoactive drugs and psychotropic drugs, which are prescribed.

Psychotropic drugs - drugs that are prescribed to affect or change mood, cognition or behaviour. Like antidepressants.

Basically psychoactive drugs that are prescribed are called psychotropic.
