That is something that only you can decide. I have spent thousands myself, for bloat surgery and chemotherapy. Not including all the day to day stuff - flea preventative, shots, dewormers etc.

If you start spending over 200 dollars on your dog for toys and stuff you need to calm yourself down. But if the dog is really sick it dont matter how much the money you treat the dog as a family member. Just make sure the vet is true and knows what he is talking about..friend lost his dog caz the vet gave the dog a clean health of bill.
I get toys almost every month spend about 5-10 dollars, treats about 10, food for the big bags are about 20 because I have two large dogs. Beds for large dogs are expensive just buy when needed. Crates and pens are pretty much the same only when needed I have one that was given to me. brushes you need to pick ones that will be best for your dog's hair most are like 2-20 some are more. groomer's if you think your needs it 5-20 maybe more depends on the groomer. Remember the bigger the dog the more it will cost.
you can also look around for dog stuff at garage sales and see if you know people that may have crates and will give them away.

It really depends on certain factors.I have literally spent thousands on my dogs and pups to keep up with there health etc. for eg. one of the pups from my litter was very ill it had blood poisoning from another puppy scratching it.. we took her to the vet the bill was over $1000.00 the way i looked at it was not only am i responsible for her life but for her care as well. people buy dogs but dont expect to have to dish out money for there lives. in a way dogs are like children they need:: love, shelter, companionship, food, warmth, and medical care. sometimes if you can not afford the bill you maybe able to find a vet who will help you by making payments. I dont mean to sound harsh or mean but animals are important too and need more people to realize this, if we are to own an animal they we should truly take the best care of them we can. :-) the reason i said it depends on certain things is it would completly depend on what happend to him , is it better to put him down etc.. also note when the puppy with the blood infection went into the vets they gave her a %40 chance of surviving.. she is alive and completly recovered from her sickness, but again it doesnt mean every dog will recover but even 40% is better than 1%

Although I would try to help my dog as much as possible. I think it is important to factor in the age and health of the dog. If a dog is very old and sick, I dont always feel it is right to have the dog go through surgeries and have it continue to suffer. You have to do what you feel is right based on the circumstances.

It all depends on how sick...If the chances are slim that they will live and it will cost you thousands to keep them alive for an undetermined amount of time, it isn't worth it to you or the dog...
You see, people forget. Like the response above mine...Yeah, they are like little people, in your heart. But they can't tell you if they are hurting, they can't talk to you if they are in pain. They will show you to some extent, but you just cant tell..Dont make a wrong choice of keeping them around because you want them around. a lot of people do that. they spend thousands on a dog that should be gone by now, because they want them around..the dog might want to go and not live in pain. no one wants to struggle and live in pain... as for knowing when it is time, the best answer anyone can give, is you will know....
now if it broke his or her legs or something and is "hurt" than ya, spend the money to fix her...but healthy wise, you have to be carful you arent making her struggle for a longer amount of tiime than she should. good luck

i work at a vet clinic and i've seen client's spend thousand of $$$ on thier pet's. some think of them as thier children. so let me ask you this how much would you spend on your sick child? but if the animal is sick with a cancer or a tumor that can not be operated on and you don't want him or her to suffer i would euthanise. it's the humain thing to do.other wise see if the clinic you go to will take payment's so you don't have to pay all at once.most clinic will work with a person to help. our first rule of thumb is :first do no harm.do what ever it takes to help the client and animal. hope this help's and goo luck.

Depends on how sick. I have six dogs. If they had diahhrea or stopped eating or couldnt use the restroom. Id spend the money to get the vet to help. But, if they are starting liver or kindey failure Id put them to sleep.

How much money you spend on your dog some of that depends on your ability to pay, because a year ago I had 1 of my yorkies in the back yard and a big dog broke into my yard when I had 3 of them in the yard and hurt him the vet told me that it would go up into the thousands of dollars to try to do anything for him and they didnot think he was going to live because his neck was broke, and that it would be inhumane of me to let him live in misery, so it depends if the vet can cure it or not.

if you really love your dog then you should spend as much as you want (don't get carried away and live on the streets)considering that it won't just die in a few months because of old age or uncureable sickness/disease after paying out thousands because all dogs die.

Spend time, not money! Remember that your dog isn't a person and it takes time for them to learn how to respect you and be a worthy companion.
If you want to splurge though, go ahead. So long as you or your family aren't suffering on the lost money there's not really a limit.
