my hair was coloured in a dark brown..I then got some blondish highlights..a few days ago I coloured my hair with a golden brown,to get back to a nice medium, chocolatish brown,..its just that that golden brown has got too much of a red touch..but I dont like that..I just want brown without red..I got told I should use a neutral colour to get the result I want..is that true? if so,what is a neutral colour?? i saw one today,HERBAL ESSENCES-Medium cool brown..could I use that?? dont want my hair to go green...HELP!!!!!!

Ok here is the thing-gold has red in it. Ash is the opposite of gold so if you buy the cool color (cool is ash) it may turn your hair an ugly gray-green ash color. You need to get a neutral color and the box will say neutral but the problem is when you use highlights you are basically bleaching your hair which will damage it and cause your hair to become porous so the color is not going to go on evenly. I would just wait it out few weeks until it fades or go to a salon but DO NOT buy a cool or a warm color

I agree with the others who answered. Save yourself some grief and see a professional, it does sound like you need an ash toner - but trying to do this yourself using box colours from the chemist could lead to a bigger hair disaster that will only be all the harder to correct. Yes, it is likely to cost you more but in the long run you'll get the result you need.

the home dyes are never true so a medium brown will look black no doubt about it. it needs an ash/neutral colour but you do need it done professionally. it might just need a semi permanent which is alot cheaper, go in, a consultation is free!

A chocolate brown will have a reddish hue. Which is actually warm not technically red.
I'll have to agree with everyone else. You really need to go see a stylist.
When you see a color on a box, that color is based on virgin hair. Once you've put a color on your hair, you'll never get that color that you see on a box.
Go to your hairstylist and good luck.

Get a shampoo called shimmerlights from your local beauty store (might be at walmart) or drugstore. before you mess with your color. the shampoo has a purple dye that will zap out warm colors. Do not over use!!!!! use till your color is right and them like once a week or moore if needed. if that doesnt work go to a pro. Color from a box ie herbal essence...is VERY UNPREDICTABLE!!!!! Especially if you are trying to do corrective color with it.

ok first ash colors normally correct reddish hair but can also turn u green so dont run to wal mart just yet i agree u need to go to a salon but first go to a beauty supply store ask them for atoner they will give you one and give u instructions on how to use it.. just tell them you need a toner to tone down the red then if that doesnt do what you want then go to the salon PLEASE DO NOT PUT ANYMORE COLOR ON YOUR HAIR or you may end up looking like brittany spears by accident lol ..
