ah, love is a many splendored thing when your mouth is wide open.
But seriously, agape love has nothing to do with romance. In the NT there are three Greek words that are used when you see the word love.
agape - used when referring to God's love, wide open meaning that it is all encompassing
eros - where we get the term erotic, meaning the romantic or sexual love
phileo - brotherly love, hence Philadelphia the city of brotherly love, basically meaning love between friends.
Wasn't "Mouth Wide Open" the sequel to "Eyes Wide Shut"?

This type of love is called A GA PE not a gape as in wide open. This is the type of love which allows us to love our fellow man and our enemies in the sense that we want what is best for them and we will do anything to help them without expecting anything in return no matter how unloveable they might be. This is the type of love that Jesus has for us and had for us when He died on the cross. This is the best type of love to have but you have to work at it. It is not a natural type of love.

I don't think we can "learn" agape love. The Bible says when you seek Him (God/Christ) with all your heart you will find him. Christ changes our heart when we seek him. It is only through seeking Him that our human heart (naturally filled with deviance; see Genesis) can love in the agape form - with no strings attached. Agape love, in my opinion is more of a verb than a noun. It is love in action without expectation of reciprocation. In other words it is not I love you and treat you in this way, so that you will love me and treat me in a certain way. You love - period. In words, thoughts, and deeds. Regardless of the other person's response.
This love does not say... I'll accept your behavior no matter what. It says, I love you inspite of your behavior. Even if your behavior is unacceptable - you are loved. Just like what Jesus said to the woman about to be stoned for adultry..."your sins are forgiven (he loved her). Now, go and sin no more." He loved her enough to tell her, in essence, what you are doing is bad for you. It will hurt you. This is the right way. It is better for you.
Trying to tell someone you love that they are on a bad path is hard, but, if you truly love someone (agape love)can you let them continue down a road to destruction?

I don't know what you're talking about.
Agape love is ideal, but I don't know who pretends it's something else or pronounces it funny.
