Everyone, or at least everyone in America wants to be a superstar, be it a pop or sports star. Even if they have no way to control their voice box, people who are trying to be nice will tell them that they can sing. Then 'Bam' they get it in their head that they can sing with the best of them. It's hard for people to stay in tune, when they don't practice alot. They hear themselves singing in their head and it all sounds good to them, but not to people listening to it. People who can sing can hear every tone and pitch that their voice gives off, and can keep a concious control of it. Other people can't tell the difference and it all sounds the same to them. I think it stinks when everyone thinks they can sing because it really makes it hard for people that actually can sing to do it professionally. My biggest peave with society is that men automatically think that if you can sing, then you obviously have to be gay. I've always loved singing, but never did in school because of peer pressure. Now I only sing when it pays off, and just use my voice to do impressions. It's a shame. Plus if you plan on making a career of singing, you don't need to worry alot about your grammer. It's not like your trying to be novelist or anything.

singing is a quality that some people take for granted, where others have to consciously learn how to do it.
Anthropologists are now theorizing that man ( as in Cro-Magnon) sang before he talked.
the fascination with singing is that is not only is fun to do, but, if done right, also triggers mechanisms in the brain that start producing serotonin and endorphins, those body chemicals responsible for a natural high, or for feeling happy.
I think the latest batch of singing shows is just another of those mass media things to get people to do what they already like to do. Studies have shown however that there is a marked drop in the number of school children that are encouraged to sing ( how many school systems even have money for any music education, let alone someone who knows how to and can encourage the next generation of kids to sing?)
Not everyone hears accurately enough to sing in tune without some help. Not everyone has enough confidence to sing out in front of other people. It's not necessarily a "controlling talent" as you put it, but it does require awareness of what actually happens in the body. The voice is the whole body, the whole body is the voice. If you're not aware, you don't sing as well.
It's also paying attention to what you're doing ( much like spelling) and not just letting anything come out. The cows in the meadow next door to me do that. People have brains, so let us please use them.

Here here Lynn!!

It all depends on the person, and their natural ability, and their comitment and eagerness to learn. It's not all about just singing in key, thats only the beginning!
Why does everyone wanna do it?? well it's a glamorous sort of career isn't it? singing away, centre of attention, getting lots of compliments, not doing alot, earning lots of cash etc etc etc......
