I had a dog that did this. I had one of thise "Kuranda" (a square or rctangular shaped bed made out of PVC pipes and wire mesh with a coating on it) type\knock off brand pet beds in the back her kennel to lay up on, and she like to dig at it while she was standing on it to try and flip it over. She had put a lot of holes in the material by doing this, and eventually she got her toenail caught while I was gone. I came home to a bloody kennel, and one embaressed looking dog. The blood was thankfully dry, and it looked like she had licked at the broken toenail and naturally stopped it from bleeding or it stopped on its own, I wasn't sure. I went ahead and called and took her to the vet, and they had to trim it way back. They said she didn't start crying until they were shaving the hair around the foot. She was ok with clipping the toenail off and stopping the bleeding. She was such a drama queen! She had to be fitted with one of those E-Collars to keep her from licking at the toe. She was also put on pain killers, and anti-biotics to help the healing. Its really a big deal when a dog breaks a nail, unlike is is for humans. Home remedies to stop bleeding are corn starch or flour. But you need to get to the vet to make sure the toe and foot are ok. The toenail will eventually grow back. Look at it this way, that one less toenail you have to cut for a while. :)

Take the dog to the vet...sometimes they have a sliding pay scale. Is the nail bleeding? If not a lot, you could try the baking soda/water paste. This is supposed to stop the bleeding if not a lot of blood. I doubt the paw is hurt, just bruised. But I'm not a vet & I certainly could't touch your dogs paw to really tell. If your dog has a vet already then he/she will only charge about $15 to look at the paw. If your dog has never been to a vet the cost will run between $45-up. Call around and ask their price after you tell them what the problem is. Good luck

When in doubt, off to the vets. Thier toe nails are alot like out finger nails, if it bleeds try a steptic pencil or wax (just rub a candle on it dont use melted wax you'll both get burned doing that). Most of the time they heal just fine, like when you trim thier nails too far down. Upseting but not that serious.

is he limping or anything? does the toe look funny? chances are he just broke his nail, and didn't do any other damage. if you notice he is limping or something, you might want to call the vet. otherwise, just make sure it is clean and that he takes it easy. don't think this is a reason to rush to the vet since, like when a person breaks a toe, there won't be much they can do.

Watch that foot/toe for swelling or signs he's in pain. If he appears to be fine then he probably is. If you think he's in pain then call your vet and they may be able to suggest something w/o you having to take him in to the office...or do a search online and see if anything helpful comes up.

well, i`d ask a veteranarian. they would know what to do, and chances are they have something to help.
when my dogs nails are cut too short, sometimes they bleed. what i do is take starch, which thickens the blood around the wound, and will help it scab over, and heal. i hope this helps because i hate to see animals suffer

~Dang it, I broke a nail too! Rush me to the emergency room!.. LMAO!
Seriously, maybe you can wrap some duct tape around the nail to keep it from splitting all the way up. Otherwise, not a big deal.~

Please do not give your dog any human pain releivers. All human pain releivers put your dog in great harm and could kill them if the dose is not correct for your dogs weight. You should get your dog to the vets for examination.

Just make sure it's clean and watch for signs of infection. If part is not broken off completely, ie loose, have it cut off.

There insn't anything you can do really. A dogs tongue is VERY clean so let him lick it and it will heal just fine.
