Nee How!
I am going back in a few weeks. You need to listen to Mandarin to learn it and most sites just give you the written translation. You must know about the four tones by now.
I would read the Art of War and The World is Flat for some insite into Chinese business. Visit real restaurants that serve Chinese food and stores that cater to Chinese...I do!
China is very different. Confusionism and communism have greatly influenced the people. Best of luck with your studies.

I'm Chinese, there's so much to talk about China but I can say it's a country you have to visit. We're all friendly people, as for not being a safe country well it's kind of a misconception anyone who's not been to a foreign country is probably a bit apprehensive, it's understandable. Try taking mandarin classes for english speakers, I for one am impressed if other people can speak our language fluently and many Chinese feel that it's a sign of respect for their culture. Good luck!

I'm form Hong Kong China and I studied in England for my first degree and traveled a lot. But to be honest, I won't say China is very very safe. Because as you know China is not small and the cultures there are rich..some cities are more modern, some are more traditional...and so regarding the security issues also depends on which cities...However in general all the big cities in China are safe, and I don't mean to make you scare. I just want to point out that as a tourist no matter where you travel you have to be caution esp. for a gal.
You are welcome to add me ;)

If you come to China and teach English, you can always live at the schools and they are very safe.
