I have tattoos myself and most of my friends have alot of ink. It has been my experiance that most of the really reputable artists dont like to do a first tattoo on a neck, wrist or top of the foot. That does not mean that they wont do it for you it just happens to be a rough spot for a first tat. In any case as far as the pain goes I had gotten two on my lower back (on either side of my tail bone) they are about 4x5 inches and are mirror images of eachother. The one on the right side was fine but the one on the left hurt more. I was told it had something to do with the muscles and that every person will react to each spot differently. I wont lie, it does hurt a bit at first then it burns and eventually it goes numb (in my experiance anyway). The picture that you want is awsome though and I do think it would look great on a neck or wrist. If you think you may want more than one tattoo then maybe think about getting one somewhere else first. If this is the only one that you want, dont let anyone scare you away from it, just make sure that you find a really good artist in a very clean establishement and enjoy the ink.

I have a tattoo on the back of my neck. I can honestly say this, the only way I knew he was back there was because of that damn buzzing sound from the machine and needle. I believe if they comes up wit a way to get silent tattoos there would be no pain. The noise is what makes u think about it. Not the feel of it. I thought it would hurt like all hell, but I was fine. Either that or he was very gentle. I mean, I felt it but it wasn't painful. Hell, I don't know how to explain. It didn't hurt afterwards either. I was expecting all kinds of pain. I literally felt nothing after getting the tattoo.

Paula E is right. Most tattoo artists won't do work on your neck as your first tattoo.
You should go talk to a tattoo artist and ask them if would they do it. Don't get your heart set on that being your first tattoo. The design is cool, but you might reconsider where you put it. Back, arm, leg, and chest all come to mind as places you could get it.
After you have a few tattoos under your belt then you might find someone willing to do you neck. I started my sleeves before I got a tattoo on my neck. And I doubt anyone would have touched me unless I'd had lots of other highly visible ink.
You can handle the pain. Don't be a wuss.

i have never had a tattoo on my neck before but in my opinion all tattoos hurt. is that REALLY what you want to get? at best it is a mediocre flash that hundreds of other people already have. also the fact that you don't have any tattoos tells me that you probably should rethink getting your first one on your neck. there is a stigma for people with tattoos and you will be judged based on the fact that you have visible tattoos. all of my tattoos so far i would rate the pain as being between 3 and 7 with a norm of about 5.

I have a tattoo on the right side of my neck behind the ear. It didn't hurt nearly as much as I thought it would. Actually, of all 3 of my tattoos, that one hurt the least.

i have ink on both left and right and rear of my neck the only time it got a lil painful (on the sides) was when he got closer to my jaw other then that i watched saw3 while he was doing them so id prolly rate it at a 2 depending on ur pain threshold
i also tend to disagree about the "stigma" over ink, ppl r much more accepting nowadays this isnt the 60's, even ppl looking for help to work

Why do you need to ask if it will hurt? Usually, needles injected into a person's skin repeatedly hurts.
Also, pain is relative depending on the person. One person's scale of pain is different than another person's.
Don't let pain deter you from getting a tattoo.
