From what I've read, it's iffy. Some claim it's great, others say it's ineffective. Bottom line is if you don't make a lifestyle change (eating better, exercising regularly) it won't matter because whatever weight you lose by using a pill or fad diet or you'll gain it back (and often more) when you stop using/doing that thing.
Might as well make the healthy change and realize that is what you need to do for life...quick fixes often work, but only for a short period of time and you often end up later worse off than before you started.

"It has not been scientifically proven if Hoodia works as an appetite suppressant. No published peer-reviewed double-blind clinical trials have been performed on humans to investigate the safety or effectiveness of Hoodia gordonii in pill form as a nutritional supplement.
One scientific study has been published in which the extract was injected directly into the brains of rats.[8] The author of the rat study said that P57 was easily broken down by the liver, so it might be hard to take in enough of it to ensure that it had an effect. MacLean cautioned that currently available supplements might be inadequate, stating "I question whether there is really enough of the active ingredient in there to do much."

Here is a place that reviews a bunch of weight loss programs, dieting aides, supplements and so on. I believe they have some supplement sites listed that sell Hoodia. The site even has categories like diabetes, low fat and hypnosis. Pretty cool site.

Many of the programs listed have consumer reviews, so you can read what others think of the different programs.
Hope this helps!

I saw on some show on Discovery channel that Hoodia is a plant that some tribe in Africa would chew on to supress their appetite. Sopposidly it really does work...they put it in some diet pills now.

I suggest that you try body cleansing. I tried it and really got lean quickly. I lost 15 pounds in 9 days and also 3 inches off my waist. I do body sculpting so getting leaner was my goal. My sister did this program too and she lost a lot of weight quickly. I did not know too much about cleansing but there are a lot of TV commercials about this stuff. This is a body cleanse and not just a colon cleanse, I wanted my body to get lean quickly and this did the trick! I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!
