Just to give the Med. field more info. I lost a tooth (freak accident) and never bothered going to the Dentist. Every once in awhile I get these "acute pain" right behind my right eye. I use to think it was just a sinus headache, but I'm having sedcond thoughts now and have done my own research and this is what I have discovered.

I'm surprised your dental infection, or abscess, wasn't dealt with Before it spread into the sinus cavity.. however it is Now essential for it to be treated by antibiotics, so see the dentist immediately.
I most normally prescribe penecillin to fight this type of bacterial infection ( examples Calvepen, Augmentin), occasionally Teracycline.
With more obstinate presentations I sometimes use one of the above in conjuction with Flagyl, an anaerobic antibiotic.
However it is for your dentist to treat this infection so see her/him without delay.
FINISH all prescribed antibiotics, even if you feel better, Unless otherwise advised by your dentist or doctor

Actually you probably have a sinus infection but not caused by a toothache. A sinus infection will make you feel like you have a tooth ache because the roots of the upper teeth rest just below the sinus cavity, and when the sinus are full and swollen from and infection they push on the upper teeth's roots, making you feel like you have a toothache. Now you can have both, but they are usually not related. So you will need to see your medical doctor for treatment and he will prescribe an appropriate antibiotic and antihistamine. Which is where we will refer you when you come in with a tooth ache that's caused your sinuses to be infected. We have this happen quiet a lot especially this time of year. Hope I've been of some help in clearing this up, go see your medical doctor. Good luck and hope you get to feeling better soon!

I just had an abscessed tooth and the doctor prescribed Keflex for a week and I got better and then got a root canal. Please have the tooth extracted or have a root canal and crown or you will continue to have problems. Some extremely serious conditions can occur through poor dental hygiene.

Penicillin VK or 500, but if you have an infection it is best not to fool around with it. If your tooth is infected you will need to go to the dentist and they will perscirbe medication for you. If you can not afford a dentist you can go to your local pet store they carry penicillin, but beware self treating is not the best way since infections that go untreated or treated wrong can develop into something more serious! Try a dental school if you have no insurance! good luck

What do you mean by 'type'?.
You might need oral or IV antibiotic depending on the severity of infection but, for the most part Oral antibiotics are prescribed.
Usually, it's one that will cover 'gram' +, gr - and anaerobic organisms....such as 'Augmentin" (penicillin + clavulinic acid).

I have taken both penicillin and amoxicillin for sinus infections. You doctor will prescribe the best broad spectrum, as well as the most effective for your infection.

That is up to the doc/dentist to decide what antibiotic they feel would be best for you. There is no single antibiotic that works best for everyone.
