I understand barrel length is a difference and the use of various choke tubes, but is one gun "straighter" than the other?

Yes, the stock on a trap gun is typically "straighter", or it has a "Monte Carlo" comb with the raised cheek-rest.

The rib on a trap gun is higher to align just below the eye on the straighter/raised stock, and the rib slopes down toward the end of the barrel (more than a field gun) so the gun shoots "high" - you'll see the rising target break over the end of the barrel - no covering it up (field guns shoot flat). The high rib also aids with heat dissipation - the heat from the barrel won't distort your sight.

Trap gun barrels are 30", 32", or 34" typically - most over/unders are 30" or 32" while the singles/un-singles are typically 32" or 34". Autoloader and pump-shotgun barrels are usually 30".

Chokes range anywhere from Modified to Full and everywhere in-between (Improved Modified, Light Full) - but I know people that use an Improved Cylinder or Light Modified for the first shot in doubles. It depends how fast you shoot, and how well loads pattern - in testing, myself and others have found certain loads pattern better in Improved Modified than a Full choke.

Since someone else brought it up, trap loads are simply light target loads (except for long-handicap which use a handicap load at velocities 1200fps +). A load of 9's can be used for singles and first shot in doubles, a load of 8 1/2's for the same, a load of 8's for any part of the trap games, and a load of 7 1/2's for second shot in doubles, windy/cold day singles, and handicap, works fine. Its your choice! Shot load weight can be 1 1/8 oz, 1oz, or 7/8oz (you can go lower, but its not advisable), in a 12ga load. There is no special class or consideration for smaller gauges/calibers (.410).

The choke pattern is different and the shot used in the shell is smaller.

Trap shooting guns are for when you come upon something caught in a trap.

In trapshooting you are scored by how many clay discs you shoot out of 20.
