Our cat is going to have kittens soon and I would like to know what we will need to do when they are born? any special needs? how soon after can we get mom cat fixed? Do we have to take mom cat to vet after she has kittens or just when we get her fixed?

Well I have had cats and kittens all my life. Make a nice palet somewhere in a dark quiet room. You can also just pt an old blanket or towls in a laudry basket. Show the mom cat it, she will most likely like the sopt you have chosen for her. Just when she has the kittens leave her alone as much as possible. When kittenes are old enough not to need mom to drink milk from (6-9 weeks) then i suggest thats when you get the mom cat fixed.
good luck.

Many of our cats had litters & we never did anything special except clean up the mess & give her a great NEW place to keep them so we could keep an eye on each one. Make sure each kitten is getting fed enough. Our cat was fixed the same week the kittens were born. NOW days, with the over population of kittens/puppies, vets aren't waiting like they use to. Don't be surprised if your mama cat sneaks away to have those kittens in "your closet, under your sheets, etc"...lol They like dark out of the way spaces to give birth. Make sure you feel her belly after the kittens are born....don't want any of them lagging behind. If you take your cat to a vet regularly I would suggest a quick check up right after the birth. Not a lot of ppl will splurge on their pet but just for the safety of any left behind kitty's or other health risk...I would do it. But so many thousands don't. It's your choice. Good luck!

I just went to the vet yesterday with my pregnant cat. If you have not done so, you should do the same. He said thats cats usually do very well on their own but sometimes problems arise. For example, if the placenta does not break during birth, you will have to rip it open off the kitten. You r vet is the best person to ask. My vet wants to see mom and kittens 24 hours after birth. You cant get her fixed until after the kittens are weaned (probably after 6 weeks)

If you are not yet doing so, your cat should be eating kitten food for the extra protein and fat and continue to do so through nursing.

OOOOHHHHH!!!!! This is such a great event. My cat had kittens 07/29/05. I was there for the whole thing. OK-1st: when the kittens are born, the mom will clean them very thoroughly. She may even be VERY protective of them, so watch out for that, she may attack you if she thinks you may take one or hurt one. They don't have any special needs. But what I did for the mother, I bought her a bed to have the kittens in (for the cushion). I lined it with sheets that I didn't want anymore and threw them away once she finished (they were bloody). You should wait 3 months before getting her fixed. She will be nursing them, so wait until then. Good Luck. Any questions, you can email me.

Here's an article about how to take care of a pregnant cat. It also has links to articles about kitten care and related topics:

She and the kittens will have to go to the vet shortly after birth for a post-natal check up. You can get her spayed about 8 weeks after the birth - but be careful, she can go in heat before that, and you don't want her to get pregnant again!

Supply her with a large box lined with newspaper for the birth. (She'll probably have them somewhere in the back of your closet or under your bed anyhow though) Once she gives birth all you need to do is give her a quiet out of the way place to nurse her babies and give her plenty of food and fresh water handy. She will not need to go to the vet unless she has problems. Once the kittens are weaned she can be fixed.
