While the crook has gotten pretty underhanded in their methods, I'm still a firm believer in paying forward. If and/or when I come across a situation like you described, I always drive by (slowly if conditions are safe), and when I do stop I always make sure to pull in front of the disabled vehicle at least 40-50 yards so that when I get out of my vehicle, with my mace in hand, I can survey the surounding area before approching the person. I always look at the persons hands while approching along with the immeadiate area. When I get about half the way to the stranded person I open my phone and dial 911 and put my finger on the send button (just in case), and then immeadiately get a good look at the person attire, and anyone else that might be in or around the vehicle. I have been very fortunate not to get myself into any precarious situations. However, I did once upon a time allow someone to sucker me into a scam where the lady was broke down and stated all she had was a check and since it was the late afternoon, and we couldn't get anyone to accept a check, for towing, I gave her, at her suggestion, $ 300.00 and she in turn wrote me a check to deposit in my account. Turns out the checks were stolen, I went to jail for a night, and this woman was nowhere to be found. You have to be very carefull if you plan on doing the right thing. As far as myself, I still believe in paying it forward, and let the good Lord take care of the rest.

Yes. I would say that I am a good Samaritan because in the 20 years that I have driven taxi in Madison, WI, I have learned to read most people. I also learned to read some people when I worked at my folks campground for 11 years.
In that time, I feel that I have gotten a good look at many different people. While I drove cab, I had someone stick a knife in my ribs, 2 guys tried to do a strong armed robbery on me, and I have had 2 different time when guys stuck a gun to my head.
Evidently, their efforts didn't work because I'm still here.

I guess this is where your character is tested. You help one person and you get pooed on from a great height.
Personally, for me, I've been in similar positions, but people I have helped have for the most part genuinley needed helping. Those others who would say one is interfering are the minority and in your case you have to show that despite the blow to your pride and the hassle it caused you, you will rise above it and not let a minority of scum, latvian or otherwise damage your view of your fellow men and women who are on the whole not too bad.
**** happens dude!

Yes I have tried to be all my life to be I have been conned for the want of a better word several times and you would think I would have learned my lesson.
The worst time I got caught out was when my daughter was little and I lent her pram to a girl I knew who lived down the road from my where my Mother lived (Royal Windsor). Her her own baby's pram had to get wheel replaced (so she said)
I never saw either the girl or my daughters pram again. The girl did a moonlight with her child never to be seen until Social Services caught up with her and her husband two years later living in Wales. My own husband was just livid with me.
But I have never learned it just my nature to want to help folk. So I guess I am just stupid.

I would be very wary about doing what you did to help as it has happened before to a friend or mine.
I gave a lift on a really wet and windy day to a hitch hiker in Wales once and he stole my lunch and a book from the back seat.
It never put me off, if its in your nature to help you will still do it but be careful and stay safe.

I am a good samaritan however you have to know how to read situations that may become dangerous, a similar thing happened to me but it was romanian people who flagged me down and asked for a lift in Glasgow City Centre. I always drive with my doors locked in the car especially in city centres or rough areas where my work used to take me, i was simply polite and told them i couldnt help them. Dont give up helping people cos karma will come around and get these people who done this to you. hopefully they will get crabs ha ha. hope that last bit cheered you up!

I am a good samaritan, but I think in your situation, I would have offered to use my cell phone to call someone for her instead of getting out of my car. But that is just me.
I think everyone is a good samaritan in a way, but doing things in thinking about your safety and well being is nothing that is wrong.

In todays world, you have to careful and analyze the situation, before jumping in. Not everything is what it seems. This is sad, but you have consider your own safety.
