Buy an arch support, one with an ample amount of cushioning. Don't use a heel support. That will only mask the problem, not cure it.

A solid arch support allows your midfoot to hit that cushioning first when you step down, and the pressure will be absorbed there and taken off of your heel.

Then try this. Place the ball of your foot on a step and let the heel drop down and stretch. There is a heel cord that runs under your foot and can shorten up, leading to pain. This exercise will help to relengthen it (it's better to do it barefoot or with a slipper or flip flop. You'll get the best stretch this way)

This exercise and the arch support may be enough to solve the problem.
