I'm looking at mossberg combos, 12 gauge w/ a 24" rifled and a 28" smoothbore barrel. Both the 500 and 835 come in these combos, the latter being about another $80 or so where I was looking. My question is what are the benefits of the 835 over the 500 and would it be worth the difference? As far as what it will be used for, I'm trying to get one gun that will handle most things, not necessarily the best at anything but can do everything if need be or whatever if that makes sense, will probably end up shooting more skeet than anything else. I know the 835 (like the 535) will take a 3.5" shell and is also a litle heavier because of that, anything else major to take into account? Thanks

The Mossberg Model 500 is a fine choice for a basic do anything "ok" type shotgun. In fact it was the first shotgun I ever owned. The best features are the interchangeable barrels and chokes and the aftermarket dress up parts.

The Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag is what I shoot now. It is even par with a Remington 870 Wing Master. Or a little better in my opinion. It has some features the Model 500 doesn't. It is over-bored, ported and it will shot the 3.5 magnum loads. And like the Model 500 it has interchangeable chokes and barrels.

The Model 835 Ulti-Mag does cost a bit more but the added features are helpful if you ever hunt small birds or if you hunt turkeys or ducks. The extra features do not take anything away from it either. I used my 835 Ulti-Mag to take a large doe this year (I drew a doe tag). And it patterned very well at 45 yards. 11 out of 15 pellets.

Either is also available in camo too.

If you need a starter shotgun go with the Model 500 but if your needing a slightly better performing shotgun then go with the Model 835 Ulti-Mag.

It all depends what you want to use it for, and what your preferences are, the 500 comes in many forms, but you are limited to 3" shells, if you are seriously into waterfowling, and need the 3 1/2" shells, then i would go with the 835, but for a standard multiple use gun you can't beat the 500. One of the first guns i ever got was a 500 combo like the one you are talking about, 28" accu-choke barrel, and 24" rifled barrel, it is a good all around gun, i can use it for trap, rabbits, squirrel, and turkey, or i can throw on the slug barrel and take it deer hunting,
If you are going to be shooting skeet more than anything i would go with the 500, you will probably only shoot 2 3/4" light loads, and the 835 would be wasted money. 500's have ported barrels standard now, so that isn't a consideration either.

mikey has all your answers i am just hawking points and congratulating a good answer...you cant go wrong with either. I have both...2 of the 500's actually. u can do a little more with the 835 in that the 3.5 shells are nice in the duck blind. also there are more aftermarket goodies it seems for 835's like chokes and stuff
