When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not shouting "I'm clean livin'."
I'm whispering "I was lost,
Now I'm found and forgiven."
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble
and need Christ to be my guide.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak
And need His strength to carry on.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not bragging of success
I'm admitting I have failed
And need God to clean my mess.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are far too visible
But, God believes I am worth it.
When I say.... "I am a Christian"
I still feel the sting of pain.
I have my share of heartaches
So I call upon His name.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not holier than thou,
I'm just a simple sinner
Who received God's good grace, somehow!

For all of you who ridicule or even hate Christians this says it all!

As pointed out by the first "answeree" I have found that poem indeed was not written by Maya Angelou but by Carol Wimmer and this isn't even the original poem. I recieved this email this morning and wanted to share. In any case it still embodies the truth of the Chraracteristics, aspirations, and reality of a Christian. It still say's it all!

It is a lovely poem and so very true.
For the person who denies it is Maya that is okay, it is very much in her style.
Doesn't change the fact that the poem speaks the truth.

Whether it's by Maya Angelou or not, it's a beautiful poem, and describes exactly how Chrisitans SHOULD feel.

And actually, for the person who said it doesn't rhyme, it does. It's supposed to be a quatrain with an abcb rhyming structure. But poetry doesn't have to rhyme to be poetry.

Uh, no it doesn't. This lovely poem doesn't include the fact that, as a Christian, Ms. Angelou believes in fairy tales like people walking on water and rising from the dead. That means her spiritual serenity is dependent on believing things that aren't true.

That is lovely and I have read it before...the only thing is...it only speaks for real Christians who represent only a small portion of the people on Yahoo Answers.
