when we were on the first multi player computer game, i was always introduced as her partner, or referred to as my partner. We are on a second game now and she is refering to me as her girlfriend. To me the girlfriend tag refers to a casual relationship while the partner tag refers to a committed loving relationship. She said that to her they mean the same thing, but I told her they do not mean the same thing to other people, especially people who do not know us. She has also used the girlfriend tag in the real world. Please let me know what you think about this.

I think they mean the same thing. But I world rather be called someone girlfirend rather than their partner, just because to me, it shows me that they other person is will to let everyone else know that we are together. When are partner can mean diffrent things to different people.

The context of the situation makes all the difference in the world. Are you two dating? If so, then she and you should decide a norm on which term means what when introducing you as her gf. If you two are not dating, then a simple non-referring term as friend or 'game-partner' should be substituted. If on the game introductions are used, then partner would mean merely an accompanying role player. If outside of that game medium, then partner would usually entail a relationship context like a significant other. If this bothers you in how you are being introduced, let that person know. If you do not wish to mislead others, set up a term which you both can use to not misguide someone else. But if she is proud of you for being her 'significant other' or 'partner in life' or 'gf' or 'bedbuddy', then choose a term which best fits you both! Have fun with it. Who cares what others think. As long as you enjoy the pleasures of your company, no matter the context. =)

I agree with you completely. Partner implies a commitment to a relationship, while girlfriend is far more casual.

YES! i think that when you say girlfriend: that means that things are more on a personal level and when you say partner: that means that things are more on a friendly level.
