Not always. Nervous breakdowns can be caused by physical conditions. A few years back my wife underwent some treatment for cancer. It caused major changes in her horomones that made her very angry and upset. She was afraid to go out of the house. When she went to church, she had to sit way in the back in a chair away from everyone else because she was terrified to have people that close to her. But during all that time she never lost her spiritual faith or gave up on God. All those things were caused by PHYSICAL problems in her body, not spiritual problems.
Once the treatment ended, and she was able to get her horomones rebalanced, those fears and phobias disappeared.
Through the whole thing she never lost her faith, or her trust in God.

I would not compare the two. A nervous breakdown is a very "low" point in one's life where they don't function. It's a total collapse, not a desirable condition.
A spiritual breakthrough on the other hand is something uplifting and often sought. It renews your spirit.

NB's don't exist, because it's just a made-upname for people who have no real frame of refernce for matters psychological.
I don't blame them; it's a new field overall.
Now, NB's mean you can't funciton.
Spiritual breakthroughs I would imagine, actually help the person function.
Totally different phenomena, if you ask me.
