Reasons people choose their religion

1. It's the religion they were grown up in. When it comes to mainstream religions in the US like Christianity, Judaism and Islam family tradition is a big factor. For a family member to leave the religion of the family even partially (ie change from methodist to lutheran) Many times, a family member is ostracized for large religious conversions. For example, a Christian family would not take kindly to their children converting to a religion that goes against their tenants such as Wicca.

2. Lack of knowledge or misconception about a religion may hinder a persons curiosity or search for knowledge about religion. Children brought up in Christian churches are usually afraid to even study other religions because they are afraid of losing their promise of eternal life. They are afraid of the eternal hell fire threatened upon them by their church.

3. Social stigma outside the family can factor a persons religious choice. In the US, 2/3 of your peers are most likely Christian. You would face ridicule and possible violence towards you for converting.

4. Financial benefits. Many young people are offered scholarships and other connections for retaining membership in a certain church, temple or mosque. They can find business contacts, jobs, employees, babysitters, and other financial arrangements just from attending.

5. Wicca and other religions like it are very small and cannot offer those.

Regardless, Wicca does offer some things that the Abrahamic religions don't. Equality among men and women. Although most of the adherents to Wicca in the US are women(70% according to the COG 05/06 poll), the global numbers are about 50/50.

Freedom of knowledge was a big one for me. I was no longer afraid to read or investigate what I wanted to. There is no hindrance to knowledge in Wicca. Knowledge is considered beneficial to our empowerment.

The answer to that is the same as the question. The abuse. Growing up in or choosing the Ancient Path (which is an easy way on encompassing all the old earth religons) is as difficult as being oppressed by christian or muslin society. Imagine a 6yr old girl going to school everyday to face the other children taunting her with songs of "Jesus Loves You", or throwing things at her as she walks in the door. Or being a 16 yr old girl dating a guy she really likes only to have him bolt when she shares her Big secret. And the constant media coverage of televangelist and people like The God Warrior (from Trading Spouces I think) constantly telling the people around you that you're evil and need to be "saved". It's not an easier life, it's just different. Just like with any religion there is peace to be had, but the price is hard on most girls.

I don't see Wicca as a girl-friendly religion at all. It is one of those romantic things that opens the doors to alot of potential abuse. It encourages blind obedience to the coven leader and, in some cases, bigotry toward men. A healthy girl needs balance and a sense of her own worth and sacredness. And some sort of moral compass beyond "harm none". And speaking of which, the universality claimed by Wicca is also extremely unhealthy. I am hoping they get organized and mellow out with that soon.

And for the record, I'm not a Christian, Muslim, or Jew. I am a Neo-Hellenic Pagan and a Witch with a university education in Anthropology and religious studies and lots of personal ethnographic research to back up my opinion. That is to say, I am not basing my statements on hearsay or books, but on my own personal observations.

"Question: Why dont all girls who are relgious turn wicca/witch as most girl friendly relgion?"

Answer: Because not everyone believes exactly like you do. We have freedom of religion in this country, and men and women can join or reject any religion they want to. Deal with it.

"Question Details: Why dont all girls who are relgious turn pagan as most girl friendly relgion? ie no telling them dress repressive codes or that their are dirty...blah blah blah"

Religions have moral codes that transcend the group and benefit society as a whole. This is true of all the world religions, not only Christianity. You would be qute shocked if you traveled to a country where Buddhism was the predominant religion, becuase you would find the girls and women there to be quite modest compared to women in the US, Canada, or the UK, for instance. http://usminc.org/other

"No history of relgious war, "

Wicca is only 50 years old, it hasn't had a chance to have a religous war. of course, there were the "witch wars" of NYC in the 70's, which were more like gang fights, really.

"homophobia"

The older covens (I.e., Gardnerian, Alexandrian, Frostie, etc) excluded homosexuals at first, and some still do in fact.

"stoning or buring people alive."
Again, Wicca is only 50 years old. And for that matter, Gerald Gardner claimed to have commited one human sacrifice to "end WWII". There is more than one source to back up his account.

As for ancient Pagan religions (which have no direct connection to Wicca, but I assume that's what you're implying) their history is indeed bloody. The gladiator games of the Romans, the infant sacrifices to Ba'al and Molech, the Aztec sacrificing of virgins (sometimes thousands of people in a single day), the Wicker man sacrifices of the Druids/Celts. The Lindow man, etc., etc.

" the magic works or should I say basic herbal medicine and pyschology."

No, herbalsim, psychology, and "magic" are three different things. Most occultists believe you can burn a certain color candle and get something to happen by magic. For instance, green candles are used in money spells, red one in love spells, etc., and guess what?, it doesn't work. This isn't psychology or herbalism, it's superstition.

"You are basically a chilled out hippy, No terrorisim, no screaming about fornication., blah blah blah"

Already answered. All the world's religions have moral codes. People shouldn't do whatever they think is OK. Pedophiles don't think they're hurting their victims, should they be allowed to do as they please? The answer is "No". Therefore you can see why we have moral codes. Furthermore, the moral codes of a certain religion only apply to members of that religion, if you're not, it doesn't apply to you, so quit whinning. Nobody's forcing you to do anything. Get over it.

"I'ts fine to be happy and have fun as long as not hurting others etc. and nice to nature."

As a Christian, I do that anyway. So?

"So why be {Christian] or [M]uslim given their track record of abuse and mistreatment of girls or other relgions."

Pagans in ancient times (which have no direct connetion to Wicca, but I assume you're implying this) did indeed have a horrible track record towards women and children. In Pagan Rome, women were often burned alive with thier husbands when they died. Women were expected to kill themselves if they had been raped. Unwanted babies could be abanndoned in the country to die. Women couldn't inherit property. Christianity changed all this. Women actually gained more freedom under Christianity, which is why the majority of eary converts were women.

"As for satan worship. they have no concept of satan so magic does not come from evil gods of claptrap like that."

All the world's religions, even the now extinct ancient pagan ones, had some kind of concept of evil spirits and a hell like place for evil people. Take a comparative religion class at a community college, and that should clear up some of your confusion.

Ah someone just didn't like your question, most likely a Fundie Christian.

Well I'm female and I am an Asatruar, not a Wiccan. Most people would consider Asatru to be Pagan, although I'd say it's more Heathen.

I'm a Christian but I've read and studied about the different religions and one of my mother's caregivers was studying to be a witch and she already had her spirit guide. We talked about her choice and I understood why she made hers and she understood why I made mine. My choice had to do with my beliefs in my God and her choice had to do with her beliefs.

If you think paganism is that wonderful, you haven't been paying attention. We have our fair share of drama, politics and dogma. You're just not taking off your rose colored glasses.
