If you're currently feeding her dry food, try gradually switching her over to canned food. Even just feeding her a meal of canned in the evening and leaving dry out for her during the day is better than just feeding her dry food alone. Dry food is high in carbohydrates and low in protein, which forces cats to consome far too many carbohydrates & calories to get the protein their body needs (cats are meat-eaters in the wild and need good high-quality protein in their diet). See these links for more info: http://www.catinfo.org/

How much to feed depends on your cat's size, activity level, and on the type of canned food you choose, but most cats usually eat about 4-6 ounces of canned food per day.

Also, try to increase her activity levels by providing her with cat trees to climb, and spending time every day playing with her. A feather toy on a string, a long soft shoestring, or a laser toy are great ways to encourage her to be more active.

Good luck!

Before changing your cats diet you should take it to a vet for a health check. She could have a thyroid problem which causes her to gain or lose significant weight. Our beloved old cat who has since pasted away, had this problem. The vet prescribed medicine (only $6/mo he charged) which helped her body balance everything & she trimmed down naturally once on her meds in about 6-8 weeks. Now another cat we had was just fat...we put her food in the basement to force her to exercise. We then played "chase the yarn" several times a day...up and down the stairs. LOL We still fed her the same (3/4 c in morning & 1/2 c at our dinner time) we just made her exercise. She was at a healthier weight with in a month! And we all had fun & she loved the extra attention! Good luck!

Depends on the cat... I have two that are about 2 years old. One weighs about 7lbs, the other weighs about 15-17lbs. The small one is very petite and looks healthy for her size. The larger cat has a very long torso and is a bit chubby but not to the point in which it compromises her ability to run and play. I have been feeding them 1 cup of food a day (half in the morning, half in the evening).
If you are genuinely concerned about your cats weight, you should take her to the vet for a check up. They could help you get her on a diet to keep her happy and healthy.

Unless there are other issues going on (which is unlikely), you can feed the average cat 5.5-6oz of a good quality canned food per day AND expect that it will either lose weight or maintain its current weight.

I have a little piggy and I've been giving her that amount, although I've recently cut her down to 2/3 of a 5.5oz can per day.

I feed Natural Balance Venison & Green Pea currently, although I'm investigating switching to whole prey or a raw diet.

I agree with Bess. Cats do not get fat on QUALITY canned food and your cat will trim down on that diet. Usually a 5.5 oz can a day will satisfy a cat.

For good quality you need a food that does not contain by-product meat. Natural Balance, Blue, Eagle Pack, Wellness, Lick Your Chops, Innova Evo and all high quality foods.

Most cats get addicted to dry food as they do to tuna so don't expect your cat to take to the canned with alacrity. Just offer her the meat - she can "fast" for 24 hours and she will eat when she is hungry.

There are feeding instruction on the back of every cat food bag. We always stuck to dry food, and kept their bowls filled at all times with a healthy brand of food, and they live strong healthy lives. They are still alive and well, and almost 18 years old. (indoor cats, of course)

it totally depends on the breed and size of your cat (and also the type of food some foods are lighter than others). defenitally talk to your vet and see what they say. they may put your cat on a kitty diet food. fat cats are unhealthy and it is unfair to you and them to keep them that way. talk to your vet.
