A real egg coloured and decorated the Latvian way.

Start collecting skins from onions NOW.

Cut out squares of cloth - use an old pillow case from charity shop. Cut lengths of cloth to tie up the parcels.

Buy nice brown eggs - doesn't matter what shade, it just adds to the interest.

Collect together, putting on individual plates, things that might make patterns on the egg, ie tea leaves, pearl barley, primroses, cous cous, grasses, leaves (though nothing poisonous or dubious.) Basically anything that can be made to stick to the surface of the wet egg.

Lay your piece of cloth on the work surface. Pile a few onion skins on the cloth. Wet the egg and then stick whatever you want to it. Lay it down on top of the onion skins. Pack more onion skins over the egg until covered (thick layer, not just single)

Roll up the cloth and using strips create a parcel. Tie them up and place into big saucepan of cold water to which is added a few tea bags, some salt, some coffee - anything that is brown - and non-toxic. You could dump the rest of the onion skins as well into the saucepan.

Bring the water to the boil, and then boil for 40 minutes - check liquid levels and add to it if it is getting low.

Take the water off the boil, fill the sink with cold water and put eggs straight in. Wait for a few minutes for the eggs to be cool enough to handle.

Unwrap and while still warm rub gently with olive oil. Believe me the eggs will be fantastic colours.

Put on display. they will keep for years with little handling, but we give them as gifts in little baskets lined with mosses and flowers etc.

Serve cracked like conkers with sorrell or nettle soup.

Priecigus Lieldienu. Happy Easter. Latvian style!!!

I had my first one the other day - mini eggs while watching the Oscars red carpet - bliss.
It would have to be Cadbury's all the way - probably Dairy Milk is my fave

Personally anythin with white choc, buttons or milky bar for example! I'm 22 but you'd think i was 5!
