A lot of people do simply use religion as a set of moral values by which they live their lives.

Governments tend to use religion as a method of controlling society, for example when the Spanish conquered Mexico, they used the roman catholic church to emphasise their ruling. In this case, the Spanish city planning exemplified how they intended to control Meixco; with a large square a the centre of cities and villages, each containing civil buildings, and a church. Not only did the church unite the population, the strict moral values of roman catholicism meant that there would be little rebellion, or violence.

“A religion is a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things, that is to say, things set apart and forbidden – beliefs and practices which unite into one single moral community called a Church, all those who adhere to them.” Durkheim – 1912.
This is the functionalist's definition of religion, which is more concerned with the moral codes it provides a society with, rather than belief in higher orders, or the supernatural.

Also, differing beliefs are often due to the ambiguous nature of he bible; it can be interperated in various ways, as a result wars have been fought over single sentences.

Personally, i have abandoned all faith in religion, and instead have studied religion and its consequences rather than whether it is true or not.

What do you mean by a higher order if you are talking about the NWO anyone with any sense can see the media are brainwashing people and there are nasty people in power. Some time in the future people will take back power and look at this dark era the same way we do the third reich. It is time for change we do not need to live in fear numbers will again give us power but we need to unite and get rid of the jewish influence as it is they who are causing a lot of the problems in the middle east and using American media to dictate policy

I believe all those things because they enhance my life and enhance our entire species and we consider them virtues because they make us happier and more successful as individuals and a species. We call what hurts bad and what helps good. It isn't needful to get any more complicated than that.

I do not believe in a higher order. I believe humans invent these concepts to promote virtues on the basis of an unquestionable authority, or to gain power on the basis of an unquestionable authority.

I do not agree.

Freedom, Happiness and Virtue are values that direct non-religious people.

Religious people have not freedom to think, have a limited and so unhappy life and the values that guide their actions are mean and reactive.

I certainly aspire to those values - and try my hardest to attain them. I do not believe in a higher order, nor god-being - rather I use research and education to enlighten myself.

Higher orders are superstition. Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom.

I aspire to the values in the Bible, love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfullness, gentleness, self-control, giving to others with a cheerful heart, the law of God, and His love, in all things to be like Christ. I also aspire to hate the sin but love the sinner. I aspire to all these, but sometimes I fail, but praise be to God that when I fail Jesus saves me and forgives me.
