It really IS nothing less than abuse, because they're doing nothing to discipline the childs' bad eating habits.

I agree.
It is the responsibility of the parents to teach the children to eat, cook and enjoy healthy food from the start, and for parents who claim that their children won't touch fruit or veg - if there is no alternative then they will just have to eat it.
As for physical activity something as simple as swapping the car for a bike not only keeps the family fit, but saves money (perhaps to be diverted into dance classes/healthier food...).
Money is not an issue here, I am of limited means and still manage to keep my children fit and healthy - its a matter of priority! Its not for society to decide what's for the best, that's part of parenting - it all falls down to the parents (unless of course there is a medical condition, but there are few that have such heavy consequences).
What really annoys me is when my daughter comes home worried to eat anything with fat in it because of this healthy eating drive at school - each time I have to explain that she needs all the extra calories to fuel the amount of activity she does - is it fair that my daughter is potentially being taught to be an anorexic because so many parents can't be bothered with their own?

I agree! I think that the parents feed their children a load of junk at home and then complain and wonder why they are obese. Also they do not encourage or support their children doing exercise, so it perpetuates the cycle. Poor kids!!! But I do hate when they grow up and blame everyone else for being obese. You know why I am not over weight? Because when I start to put on weight I work out more and eat less junk!!! This would work for everyone..... :-)

No, you won't get any argument from me on that score.
It makes me bloody cross when you see parents abdicating responsibility for their children and they do it from a really early age-kids of 18months old who refuse to eat this that and the other-or won't go in their pushchair/car seat. What are these parents thinking??
I guess it's all about how you go about food and discipline in the end-we tend to explain the reasoning behind us 'being horrible' and not allowing coke etc on a daily basis. I'm fairly sure it's well established as the anecdote below demonstrates!
My son has a friend at school who apparently won't eat vegetables and his Mom allegedly lets him get away with it. My boy, at 7, regailed this tale incredulously and then summed up what I was thinking by saying 'well, I told him it probably wasn't a good idea if he came round to mine for tea because that kind of behaviour doesn't last long in our house'.

i think thay must feel guilty so feed their little johnny on crisps or sweets bless him.also reasons like letting there child get like that in the first place could be poverty its cheaper to feed them junk or lack of knowledge but that's not an excuse these days it maybe laziness cant cook wont cook and most kids who are over wight have no hobbies like football swimming the parents could do kid time go for a walk England is beautiful go walk and enjoy it and best bit its free when my kids were little thay want through the i don't like veg stage we then grow some carrots radishes lettuce tomato's peas etc and thay loved it they were out in the fresh air and were so proud of what they grew and cooked you don't even need a garden so big pot on a balcony you can grow lettuce carrots radish and tomato's and even indoors you can grow cress so to me there is no excuse

The parents should stop feeding the kids junk food just for convenience, and sitting the kids down in front of the tele just to keep them out of there way.
Perhaps if they took more interest in the children and took them out to the park or to play it wouldn't be so bad.

I agree with the woman who has an overweight child. My oldest daughter is overweight (not obese) and my youngest is skinny as a rail. They eat the same things and and are both active. She is in soccer and gymnastics, and they have phys ed in school. Still she doesn't lose the weight while the other has no problems with weight. We can attribute some of this to genetics I believe. But when the mom who feeds her child nothing but junk gets mad she needs to look at herself.

No I dont , they are the ones that give the children what they eat, and if the child wants junk food thats what they get b/c they cant stand to hear them cry. Well, my daughter is 17 1/2 months old and if she wants candy or something and I dont want her to have it she doesnt get it, even if she does cry she doesnt cry for very long you just have to deal with it.
Just like the ones that say they cant control their kids, they are out of control, well its because they didnt discipline them or make them mind.

No. It never used to happen years back. Take a good look at the parents and I bet they are not thin themselves which means the food dished up is too much and the wrong sort. No sporting activities are encouraged and TV is on all day. They can blame who they like but the bottom line is that they are to blame.

I think that if a child has a serious weight problem then the parents should take it on board not to feed them junk food and not to give them money to buy food.
