some people recommend replacing one meal at a time.
i recommend going cold turkey. only in this method it will hurt u more than it hurts him. engorgement is quite painful.

some other people will tell u not to quit at all. do what is good for u. if u want to stop breastfeeding than go ahead.

It's best to nurse for at least a year, I had several that wanted to nurse closer to two years old, and another who prefered a sippy cup at eight months old!
I let the kid HELP decide when was best!
If you need to quit, let your child pick out a big boy cup from the store, we bought 3 per child..and let him help buy his special night time juice only for big boys...it helps when they have something special to look forward to!
The special cups and juice are only for bed time use..and HE decides if he would rather nurse, or have a story and his big boy cup...stop talking to him when you nurse, make it not so nice as when he has his sippy cup! When he chooses his cup grab a book and tell him, great, now I can read to you while you drink your night time juice..extra cuddles, and just make it a more special time..but if he wants to nurse, let him, make sure there is no talking, and a quick good night, I love you/ quickly he will figure out that cups bring results, nursing doesn't get the desired result....time with mom!

With my first, I weaned him at 6 months, and it wasn't hard. I was working at the time, and not for a family friendly employer, so he was getting most of his nourishment from formula anyway. With my second, she weaned herself at just under a year. She just didn't want it anymore. With my youngest, he was over 15 months. We had to go cold turkey, because I was soooo done, but he wasn't. He was down to nursing at bedtime only by then. I gave him a cup of milk and snuggled him really close. After about a week, he didn't want it anymore.

Unless there are circumstances in your life that require you to wean him (going back to work etc), I wouldn't force it. He may not be ready. I know some people feel a stigma associated with breastfeeding over a year but I feel you should wait until your child is ready. My son was well over 2 years old before he stopped completely and he's a perfectly well adjusted 4 year old now.. I wouldn't offer it freely but if it comforts him I would let it go and try again in a few months.

I gradually stopped my 2nd daughter at 6 months by taking away one session a day, leaving the nighttime one for last. I not only helped her but it was easier on my body. My first child I stopped "cold turkey" and it wreaked havoc on me. I was miserable.
I don't know how often your little one is feeding but I would say just do it gradually, maybe making the night time session shorter each night.

I started by introducing a bottle with breast milk and a NUK nipple in between feedings to get her used to it. I started with once a day, then the next day maybe twice, and so on. It took a couple of weeks, but it worked. After a short time, I then switched to soy formula, as it is much easier to digest than cow's milk. The fat particles in cow's milk are much larger. Besides, cow's milk is for calves, who need to grow fast.
Good question.

as soon as my baby hit 12months she just refused me, if I offered her the breast she just nipped, bit and scratched me so I don't offer it to her any more. I cried myself to sleep for a week when she didn't want any milk-I felt rejected!
