I have postpartum depression for the second time (had it with my first baby too) and I can't stand the sexual side effects.

Effexor is a good one and doesn't give any side effects....at least that's been my experience. Best of luck with you and your lil ones.

Even though Paxil has been found to increase a risk of them in studies, I have had no problems. Let's face it; depression does more to quash a person's sex life than nearly anything except being snowbound alone in the Antarctic.

I wouldn't recommend Paxil, though, because the side effects of going off it are horrendous. However, some of the newer SSRIs (selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors) and such have extremely low side effects. Two I've heard discussed are Celexa and Lexapro. Of course, everyone's reaction may differ.

A low dose of Celexa did not diminish my sex drive at all. I tried a few others, 10mg Celexa worked great for me. I'm sorry you're going through postpartum depression.

Let me tell you this, I had a babysitter come over 3 days a week to watch my baby at our house. She knew she was going to be at our house watching the baby while I slept. If there was a problem she could wake me. It doesn't take long for you to get caught up on your sleep, so try to do it for a month or 6 weeks.

I would turn on my white noise machine, put in ear plugs and a mask over my eyes and slept like a log. Sleeping for a 4 hour sleep cycle did more good for me than anything else. You can handle everything better if your brain isn't so sleep deprived.

Best of luck to you. Take care.

Check out this website first before going to the extreme of antidepressants.

It could just be your hormones? You don't want to screw with your neurotransmitters if the problem can be corrected hormonally... Right?

I know that this site is predominately geared toward menopause but the toll that postpartum takes on the body is rather similar but at the opposite end of the emotional and physical spectrum.

Check with your doctor... Go to an Endocrinologist, keep taking your prenatal and take it easy on yourself... What you are doing is not always as natural as some earth mothers would like for people to believe it is. Chances are... You're doing just fine and are just too hard on yourself!

As long as you are not having dellusional thoughts of putting the baby in the Microwave... You're okay!

I would highly, highly recommend you visit a naturopathic doctor prior to starting any meds...Mental illness is definitely not something to take lightly but there are many reasons and recoveries besides a pill, which to be fair is all our Md's have time for. To be brutally honest a think sexual side effects is one of the Minor side effects if you do a bit of research. Maybe you will need meds but do yourself a favour and check out other options. Best of luck!

Many of my clients find that Lexapro works well w/o the sexual side effects... I believe it is the most well known for having fewer sexual side effects of any of the SSRI's...

Good luck!
