Country official language is spanish. However other languages (between 18 and 22) are spoken by the native mostly mayan indians. Some of those languages are:
- quiche (spoken by around 29% of the mayan population)
- kakchikel ( spoken by around 25 % of the mayan population)
- kekchí (spoken by around 14% of the mayan population)
- mam ( spoken by around 4% of the mayan population)
Other mayan languages are:
- pocomchi
- pocomam
- tzutuhil
- chorti
- canjobal
- aguacateco
- achi
- chuj
- ixil
- jakalteko
- poqomam
- 'eqchí
- uspanteko
Other languages (not mayan) are:
- Xinca (probably comes from the incan laguages)
- and Garífuna (comes from two languages: arawak und hallína).
As I told before, Spanish is the official language, however, it is estimated that a fifth of the total population do not speak this language but any of the mayan languages mentioned above

Although Spanish is the official language, it is not universally spoken among the indigenous population, nor is it often spoken as a second language. Twenty-one distinct Mayan languages are spoken, especially in rural areas, as well as several non-Mayan Amerindian languages, such as the indigenous Xinca, and Garifuna, an Arawakan language spoken on the Caribbean coast.
