The phone company is offering an upgrade from regular phone lines to fiber optics for my home. My phones and computer (DSL) work just fine as is. I know fiber optics have some advantages, but are those advantages really worth the upgrade for a residential line that has only normal telephone and computer usage?

Added note: Our internet speed (PC is a Pentium III) is satisfactory, too, for our needs.

I can see getting fiber service for the internet and cable TV. IP service is much faster on fiber than DSL, and the TV offerings such as on demand and DVR are competitive with your cable provider.

Putting your phone service on fiber involves VoIP, and their services will probably will be less expensive than your current twisted pair. But it will require that you provide UPS backup to your router, modem, and TAP to keep it running during a power outage.

If you have backup phone service via your cellphone, it's probably not an issue. Satellite TV receivers that need a phone line don't have too many problems w/ VoIP. Home security systems prefer you use a regular phone line for reliability, although you could use a cell phone dialer or IP connection for monitoring, but the cost of installing the extra equipment and getting a central monitoring service to support it can creep upward.

If the speed and cost of your regular phone line and DSL is satisfactory, you're not going to miss the FiOS upgrade.

For now it sound like is not worth paying for upgrading the exiting copper wiring inside your home.It depends on whether or not you take digital TV services into the value picture. If your question is about Fiber to the Home (FTTH ). But, if in the future you want to bundle three services ,TV, phone and broadband Internet then your answer may be yes. The future of Phone companies are broadband companies. In order to do this they are upgrading the "last mile" to Optical Fiber networks which will deliver 10-100 times the bandwidth.

yes you should take this oportunity as fiber optical cables use light to send data and as you know light travels faster than electricity, so this would make the internet faster for you
