There are many things in the Muslim faith that are considered Haram (things we are not allowed to do). There is a leniency with these however. If it is something that is a necessity to be completed (ex. eating a pig to survive) then Allah will forgive the transgression. In the case of the alcohol in the cab, that's actually illegal by most human laws, so it wouldn't make sense for ANY cabbie to pick up a passenger who had alcohol.

No, it's not bs. It says if a person needs to by necessity, it's not a sin. A blind person with a dog needs the dog to be able to live. Interfering with that is not permissible. Also, it's just the extreme ones who do this. If you are a cab driver, you are paid to take any customer from point a to point b. If you know that this will happen and still apply, it's your own fault. My ex husband started out as a cab driver, but as the years went on moved up to realty and owning a few properties. Before I had our daughter, I went with him. The ones with alcohol can get pretty violent and tend to be "no shows" or theives. Anyone would be wise to avoide them.

Interacting with dogs is not against Islamic belief..keeping them as pets only is, as cleanliness equals half of faith to a Muslim and the dogs saliva is unclean. If a Muslim wants to keep a dog to guard them or like the cause you mention to guide the blind ..it's allowed.
Alcohol on the other hand is not allowed and not tolerated. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed ten categories of people saying: “Truly, Allah has cursed khamr (alcoholic beverages) and has cursed the one who produces it, the one for whom it is produced, the one who drinks it, the one who serves it, the one who carries it, the one for whom it is carried, the one who sells it, the one who earns from the sale of it, the one who buys it, and the one for whom it is bought.” (Reported by At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah)
The Muslim cabbies won't pick-up passengers with alcohol so they won't be amongst those cursed by Allah (swt) and to guarantee that their money is halal (Islamically lawful).
I understand this is an inconvenience to those who carry alcohol..there should be a way their boss arranges tasks so customers are happy and so are cabbies.
peace unto you

I doubt that a Christian cabbie would do it. If I were a cab driver I wouldn't pick them up either. There's a lot of difference between alcohol (laws against it in cars) and dogs.
