It basically means that the number of people who actually LIVE life and are active participants in it, taking in everything life has to offer to the senses and trying to understand why we're here -- those people are very few and far between. Most people are very much mindless robots who get up, get dressed, go to work, come home, eat dinner, watch some TV, go to bed, and are caught up in this continuous mindless mantra where the only real concerns they have are a new car, a new home, vacations at Disney World, and keeping up with the Joneses. It also means that those people who ARE more alive than your average automaton don't fully comprehend life, especially on a scale of realizing what life is every minute of every day. Reminds me of a line from Shakespeare "There are more things in Heaven and Earth than are dreampt of in your philosophy." Is this quote accurate? VERY MUCH SO. It's amazing how many people have made the decision that they are going to use their brains as little as possible -- just the minimum in order to get by. Sad, but true. Wouldn't this be a much better world if people opened their eyes and WERE more aware of the world around them?

It means most people take life for granted. This is very true. We are so busy being "thick in the thin of things" that we rarely take time to stop and enjoy all that we have surrounding us.

it reflects the fact that, for most people, life has become a habit and has ceased to be a fascination. they forget that they are alive, since they are so 'busy'.
