god yes!
on a night out, i'd drink between 10 and 15 bottles of wkd. its basically liquid sugar! i used 2 get so lethargic the next day! on top of that was normally a fair few shooters and a few baileys.
i'd triple my recommended daily calorie allowance easily, especially by the time the munchies were over, where i would eat a mcdonalds on the way home and then raid the fridge.
i got to 12st 3lb (i'm 5' 5") and thought, enough is enough! i've lost 13lb to date and its still coming off, all thanks to calorie counting! i switched from wkds to malibu and diet coke, more than halved what i drunk when i did go out, and didnt go out half as often.

I had no alcohol at all throughout January and lost a stone. I didn't alter my diet at all, in fact I probably ate more.
It's easy to drink a day's worth of calories on a big night out - add that to the normal food you take in during the day plus the kebab/pizza/burger or fish and chips on the way home and multiply this by the numbers of nights out you have a week and you can see how this causes a weight increase! An excess of 3,000 calories (i.e. if you eat 3,000 calories more than you need) will result in an increase in weight of 1lb. So, if you constantly eat 400 calories a day more than you need then it is possible to gain 50lbs in a year.
This is why people gradually get fatter as they get older. The odd KitKat here and chocolate muffin there that you don't need (but tastes lovely) leads to a gradual increase in weight.
Good luck!

To gain almost 60 pounds in a year would certainly mean a lot of food and drink. However it would depend on the starting weight and of course age and height. There is also the question of exercise.
There would have to be a lack of exercise,an intake of high calorie foods, fats ,, sugars. It is doubtful if alcohol alone would be the overiding cause. Not enough information to this question. However, alcohol does not by calorific content alone add weight,it is the release of a chemical that inhibits the metabolising of fat which adds the weight in the form of fat usually around the middle.More dangerously around the heart and kidneys where you cannot see it.

If you drank so much that you gained 60 lbs. in a year....you have bigger problems than being overweight. Are you sure the majority of the blame goes to the booze....not the food?

Sure it does. A few months after my son was born, I was in the best shape! I had not had a drink for about a year because I was still breast feeding, and also had been eating healthy throughout the pregnancy. Well I kept up the healthy eating, but now that I can drink beer again.....I'm not overweight, but not in the best shape either. Beer's so yummy though!

Yes alcohol is a bit of a problem, I do eat very healthy food but I socialise a fair bit and that always includes a bit of the old alcohol, and that seems to put a bit of lard on me, but if I go a week or two without, it all falls of me.

At about 60 calories for a single pub measure of spirits it won't take long for the pounds to pile on your body and out of your wallet!

I'm not overweight (5'7" at 12stone, 17.6% bodyfat), though I can say that alcohol or rather a significant cut down in alcohol has contributed a lot to my losing weight (about 7lbs) over the past month or so.

Well, it is not a "sole" reason why people put on weight, but it sure is a big contributor. Sugar in drinks will slow your metabolism to a crawl and actually block calories from burning. Alot of sugar turns into fat too.
