Er, only an atheist who really didn't "get it" would do something like that.
Why would you think that converting to some religion would "help you to escape Hell"? How do you know that taking up religion isn't what lands you in Hell? You don't.
Even if you believed in the stakes, it'd be silly to gamble when you don't know the rules.

I guess it depends on the person, and of course depending on his mental condition at the time, after all many people are quite delusional at the time of their death due to pain or drugs or both. And since believing in ancient myths and legends as if they were reality is basically a delusional act it is entirely possible that they may profess some belief out of either delusion or fear, but since they are dying and most likely not clear of mind that can't really be held against them.

I'm sure 99% of atheists will remain atheists unless someone suddenly provides convincing evidence to support the existence of a god.

I've only been with two atheists at the moment of their death, and both went without pleading to imaginary super-beings. One fought death, the other was content to go. I've been with five theists at the moment of their death: two went peacefully, one believing he saw Jesus, one died in terror begging the doctor for more life (insisting he was going to hell, but not pleading with God for mercy), two lapsed into unconsciousness and never woke up, so I don't know what their experience was like.

I've never seen an atheist on his/her deathbed, but I would imagine they'd be concerned about the brand of shampoo they use before passing.

None of the atheists I knew who died gave any thought to religion on their death beds... they were too busy making last minute arrangements with their families and living the last minutes of their lives to the full, not wasting it on religion.

Deathbed conversions are an interesting thing; why do you think the church traditionally wanted to visit dying people?
Because when people get real scared (as in, they are dying) they will grasp on to any available straw.
But does that mean his core beliefs are unsound? No, it means he is human as are we all.

S/He merely looks back through all the good memories with joy and is glad to have had a fulfilling life, or really any life at all.

Since he knows that there is no god and no hell , he would not change his mind.
Anyway, the Flying Spaghetti Monster saves everyone so he is safe.
