You will certainly gag just breathing in the New York air so it doesn't really matter where you stay. Try Hotels.com and look for a reasonably priced 5 star hotel so your visit will be somewhat enjoyable.

Look up the Gershwin Hotel. It is in mid-town near Empire State building. They have a dorm type room for $35 per night. I recently booked it needing a place for one night due to a flight layover. I am from New York so I remember how expensive hotels can be. I thought for $35 I would get what I paid for. But I was wrong. When I got there, they had overbooked the dorm so they upgraded me to a single room for the same price. The place was the cleanest hotel I have ever been in. Of course no room service and you have to cart your own luggage to the room, but a small price to pay for a great location and nice comfortable bed and clean bathroom.

Grand Union Hotel is where I have stayed a couple of times and always on a budget. Is centrally located and clean, cost was about $115 a night, you can get cheaper but this would normally entail sharing a bathroom. Up to you.

if your going for a week or more and have a couple people with you... you can rent an apartment on a weekly basis which is better than having a small hotel room. check out vrbo.com or cyberrentals.com they are both vacation rentals listed by the owner so you pay no fees. ive rented so many vacation houses from those websites and it worked out way better than getting a hotel, although ive never rented any in NYC cause i live here. good luck!

im going to NY in april and im staying at the pennsylvania hotel,me and my sis got a double ensuite room for 4 nights at £372 for both of us which i think is a real bargain,it is couple blocks from empire state building and right across the road from maddisson square gardens also 10 mins walk from times square, subway right across the road so ideal location,i booked this through a website called cityandshow.com,very cheap site,if you type in hotel penn in your search bar, you'll come across the actuall hotel website, the lobby is very grand and it has recently been refurbished it has had a mix of good and not so good reports but it looks and sounds good to me,especially if its just somewhere to put your head down after all the sightseeing..happy travels!

Try hostels, there are some very nice ones that cost around 12-$50. That's about as cheap as you'll get in NYC, unless you sleep in a box.
