Do you think it would be a good idea if points were deducted for the answer voted worst? Would it act as a deterrent to those people who seem to take great delight in making the most inane comments?

I'm not against people voicing their own opinions, that's the whole point of a site like this. Just because you disagree with a point of view doesn't make it wrong. My grumble is with the peeps that don't attempt to answer the question in a sensible or helpful way!

Great idea - I'd vote for best and worse answers if I were given the choice.

I dont think its a good idea.... I know what you mean about the inane comments but Ive been given thumbs down for just having a different opinion, you can get loads of thumbs down if you answer in the religious section for having a different opinion and just not being a member of the God Squad. It is very rare that someone on here gives a best answer for an answer that does not agree with them so if you got taken points away you would never get a good selection of answers just a load of kiss a*rses just saying 'yes i agree'.... a lot still do that now just hoping for ten points.

After reading your added bit of info i dont think you are getting the message from other people.... We all know that the people who dont answer sensibly could do with a thumbs down but the thumbs down would still be given by people to others with a different opinion so it wouldnt work..... a bit like my answer to this one which you would more than likely give a thumbs down.... is it any clearer yet?

Sandy, I agree with your argument against nonsense answers to serious questions. The problem is if points were deducted for worst answers, a good many people would be given thumbs down because others wanted a points advantage.

No fun at all.

Lets not forget freedom of expression, we do sometimes have a different point of view to questions. Yes there are some silly answers, but there are also some silly questions that may goad peoples replies. We do have an opportunity to vote on best answers, but voting on worst? may well lead to witch hunts.

It is a nice idea but I don't think is would be a deterrent for a lot of people. There are some people that have negative point now and like it that way

Not really as if people were only answering for the 2 points or for the sake of talking rubbish they know doesn't relate to the question they would continue to do so.................to their points run out at least

No. Because very often the answer with the most thumbs downs is just one that didn't give the asker the "Amen" he was looking for.
We shouldn't take points from people just because they have differing opinions.
Just like we shouldn't report an answer and have it deleted just because the answerer disagrees with us. But that happens all the time!

Yes possibly but their will always be idiots that give a worst answer rating to people who answered decently, but disagreed. For instance the football lot, who if you dont support their team thats it for you!

Why would you want to take the freedom of speech away and/or penalise a certain section of people when they express their opinion? Are they different from you? Does that make you bigoted?
