CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! You have an excellent breed of dogs. They are very intelligent, assertive, with tremendous strenght and stamina., and fearless. They are assertive, very devoted, loyal and affectionate. A Doberman can be very head strong so you must make it known to him that you are the boss. All you have to do is shower this dog with lots of love and attention and he will be more that willing to please you. They are quick to learn. A Dobie usually connects with one person very strongly, and will want to be by your side all the time. This is why they are called a velcro dog!!! He'll be like your shadow. He will love and protect your entire family, but he will pick one person out of the entire pack that will be extra special to him. I hope you're not one to want to tie this dog in a yard because they are too intelligent, and active and this is definitely not a breed for this. He will want to be a very important and close part of the family. I am wondering how old this dog is? Enjoy your new BEST friend.

Congratulations!
You now own a dog that was not intended for first time dog owners. You should have asked this question long before you got the dog.

Anyway, you must get this dog into obedience training ASAP. They will teach you how to train your dog. You must train your dog every day (rain or shine). You must be very persistent in making your dog into a good canine citizen. You must prove to your friends, neighbors and family that your dog is a pleasure to have around (many folks are scared of dogs - especially Dobermans). I personally know a few Dobermans who are very well trained (they're also certified therapy dogs) and they are great dogs, owned by great people, but they'll tell you that it took a lot of work and it didn't come easy. I've also encountered less behaved Dobermans who were very destructive and poorly managed by their owners.
You can have a great dog if you and your family put the time and work that goes into it. Good luck.

Loads of training! They are very intelligent dogs and they learn quickly. Training helps to establish who is the top dog(you). Is it a pup or an adult? If its an adult, you may need proffessional help, dobermans are very headstrong and will not accept a weak leader. If its a pup, just enjoy your dog and treat it as you would any other breed, just use more training.

P.S. if its a pup, dont feed it too high protien puppy food, it makes them grow quicker and can cause bone problems later. Compare nutrition lables on food and choose one that seemes middle range, protien.

first thing is to take the dog to the vet for physical and shots. while your there ask the vet what kind of food would be best for him. you should walk the dog or let him out in fenced in yard at least 4 times a day. a dog with plenty of exercises is a happy healthy dog. also ask the vet any questions that you can think of. obedience training is a must. good luck.
