if you want to be a doctor of anything in the USA you need a PHD, 8 yrs of school. You can be a doctor of english or of medicine. You can be lesser medical titles with lesser school.

also some type of residency or intern at a hospital as part of school.

i'm surprised there hasn't been a right answer yet...

graduate high school (4 years)
graduate college (4 years) - any major you want, but you must take a year of chem, organic chem, bio, and physics. take the MCAT. pursue extra-cirricular activities including shadowing.
finish med school (4 years) - take the USMLE step 1 and 2, extra-cirricular activities again (esp research). apply for residency.
residency (3-7 years) - this is where you are trained in your specialty of choice. afterwards, you can choose to go into subspecialites or fellowships (additional years).

4 yrs of major(i.e science, biology)to earn a b.a.
4 yrs of med school
2 yrs of residency if speacialty it is 4 yrs. of residency.
