If you want to use something that the person can breath in, you can use ammonia or anything else with a sharp/strong odour. However, because so many people have respiratory difficulties and because inhaling things like ammonia can damage the delicate tissue inside the nose, applying a cool cloth to the back of the person's neck and the interior of the wrists while gently tapping the sides of their face might be safer.

I work in a doctors office and we no longer use smelling salts because they can cause asthma attacks, if someone faints we just tap them and use a cold clothe to wake them back up.
