It's in the county of Tyne and Wear

Newcastle is in Tyne and Wear, which is a Metropolitan County and also includes Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. Though for Gods sake, never lump poeple from Newcastle and people from Sunderland into the same boat apart from this one. Geordies will not take knidly to being called a Mackem, and vice-versa.
Tyne and Wear are surrounded by the counties of Northumberland and County Durham

Geographically North Tyneside if it's north of the river, South Tyneside if it's south of the river, collectively Tyneside.

Wearside which is further south and Tyneside are collectively Tyne and Wear which is the current (Ceremonial) county, the historic county is Northumberland.

Strictly it should be Tyne and Wear but some people use Tyneside, some use Northumberland.
