Oh, it SO needs to be changed! The foods used in schools come from government surplus supplies. The surplus is distributed to Nursing homes, prisons, and schools, in THAT order. The school food is the lowest quality on the food chain. It is full of toxic dyes, artificial colors, artificial flavors, and preservatives. The meats are of the lowest quality available. The storage and handling practices in schools are so far removed from what the health department would accepts from a restaurant. I have been raising this issue for years, but it looks like there is no end in sight. Despite the efforts of many, it just gets worse, and is something that most people are not even aware of. I pack a hot thermos lunch for my daughter every day. She cant even stand the smell of the lunchroom food

I think it's unfair to judge every school's lunch program. They have guidelines they have to follow...such as 2 different fruits and vegetables, a meat, and grain breads which is a healthy meal. At our school most meals (even french fries) are prepared in the oven also but thats so much healthier than being deep fat fried. But we throw away any left over food such as french fries. Our food we get from US commodities is very good quality and sometimes even better than we can buy from venders.

I don't know where you live, but if it's in the States there is little if no food once cooked that can be "frozen and served the next day". It is not a crime that you are not being served fried foods in school. In fact that is better in the long run. School meals are supposed to be nutritious & healthy.

When teenagers think of school meals they think of greasy or runny foods. They hate thinking back to their school days and remembering school .The reason many young people don't like school meals is because they have a lot of nutritional value. School meals are healthy and good for you. But if a pupil had to choose between a nice, healthy salad or a hamburger with fries, I think you know what they'd go for first. Some fat is needed to have a healthy diet and certain fats are even essential to peoples health, however, eating more fat than needed increases the risk of heart disease, even in children.

I agree that it SO needs to be changed! It's usually either nutritionally poor, fried, etc., or it's really unappealing.

If you didn't see the 4-part series on TV (Jamie's School Dinners) where the young chef Jamie Oliver took on the entire elementary school system in England to show how bad it was (similar to ours in many ways), and how they might fix it, the DVD may be available at the library... or you can read a lot about it here:

you're in intense college? truly? you should study that $a million.50 for lunch is truly very decrease priced. And the cost boost wasn't because of the shortcoming of scholars ingesting yet because of the present monetary situations. they don't reuse the milk scholars do not drink, because no one of their proper thoughts would purchase an opened milk field. and those packing containers no longer offered will be kept and placed out the subsequent day until eventually the expiration date has exceeded. it really is unclear that they are serving pig liver, because it really is extra intense priced that pink meat by- product, yet in the journey that they are, you're fortunate. notwithstanding, because you look so in touch, write a nicely- written letter to the superintendent of your district about your concerns.
